RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES
This position is being proposed for Med-Psych Unit at Peter Lougheed Centre and East Calgary Health Centre. 
The Med-Psych Unit is a tertiary care, multi-disciplinary program-based at Peter Lougheed Hospital. On average, the program will have 6 beds, will be open 365 days a year, is expected to have 90% occupancy and will be admitting approximately 9-100 patients per year with average length of stay to be around 3 weeks.
The position is sponsorship eligible and may be eligible for an AMHSP position.
Other staff working or consulting for the unit may include a Nurse Practitioner, Registered Nurse, Chronic Diseases Management Expert, Dietician, Social Worker, Aboriginal Liaison, Registration Clerk, Public Health RN, Booking Clerk, Home Care Case Manager, Pediatrician. 
This position will be for all working days. This physician will report to the Section Chief Child and Adolescent Psychiatry - Inpatient and Acute Care Programs. This position requires significant work with trainees, and we require a graduate degree and leadership experience in medical education. As there may be research, administrative, teaching and clinical components to this position, a longitudinal experience in these areas will be preferred. A background in research is also required.
The position provides 40% protected time for research and will include expectations to contribute to teaching and administrative service. The successful candidate will establish an active research program that focuses on the mental health of Child and Adolescent population.  The ability to interact with existing research strengths and the ability to interact with ongoing research strengths in the Department of Psychiatry are an asset. 
University of Calgary (U of C) has up to 8 psychiatry residents and up to 5 child and adolescent specialty trainees.  We get medical students from U of C to complete their mandatory rotation in C&A Psychiatry. We sometimes also receive neurology and pediatrics residents for part of their rotation or electives. As a part of your activities, you may have any of these students coming to work with you on your clinical sites.

ÔÇó ┬á ┬áPsychiatric Assessments for patients during on call activities
ÔÇó ┬á ┬áPsychiatric Assessments for patients after admission and follow up on a regular basis after admission.
ÔÇó ┬á ┬áPrompt urgent electronic charting is expected.
ÔÇó ┬á ┬áWorking closely with the dyad partner to ensure system demands are adequately met on a timely fashion.
ÔÇó ┬á ┬áEnsuring the completion of documentation on time for expedited transfers and discharges
ÔÇó ┬á ┬áProviding teaching opportunities to Child and Youth Psychiatric Specialty trainees, Psychiatry residents and medical students if present.

Expectation from East Calgary Health Centre Consultation Service.
ÔÇó ┬á ┬áPsychiatric Assessments for selected patients seen at East Calgary Health Centre
ÔÇó ┬á ┬áPsychiatric follow up for patients who need medication review.
ÔÇó ┬á ┬áPrompt urgent electronic charting using Connect Care is expected.
ÔÇó ┬á ┬áWorking closely with the Clinical Medical Director of the outpatient services and Manager ECHC to ensure system demands are adequately met on a timely fashion.
ÔÇó ┬á ┬áEnsuring the completion of documentation on time for expedited assessments, transfers, and discharges
ÔÇó ┬á ┬áCommunication with the primary care providers where necessary.┬á
ÔÇó ┬á ┬áProviding teaching opportunities to Child and Youth Psychiatric Specialty trainees, Psychiatry residents and medical students if present.

Providing call coverage approximately once per month, preferably with the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.

QUALIFICATIONS
ÔÇó ┬á ┬áFRCPC qualifications in Psychiatry with accredited training in Child Psychiatry is preferred. FRCPC in Child & Adolescent - Psychiatry or equivalent other qualification will be preferred.
ÔÇó ┬á ┬áExpert knowledge of commonly presenting psychiatric disorders and somatization disorders and working knowledge of medical conditions generally co-occurring on med-psych units such as eating disorders.┬á
ÔÇó ┬á ┬áAbility to manage a broad range of psychiatric medications.
ÔÇó ┬á ┬áKnowledge of common investigations needed to diagnose and treat common Med-Psych conditions. Medically, patients admitted to this program will be stable, with little risk of rapid medical decompensation. Patients may require medical support for an ongoing therapy, medication management, or further diagnostics or investigation. ┬áInterventions may include, but not limited to such items as IV therapy, feeding (NG, NJ or TPN) and potentially minor procedures or diagnostics. ┬áFrom a mental health perspective, patients that typically fit this profile typically internalize and suffer from anxiety, depression and self-harm . Mental Health supports would include psychiatry evaluation and treatment, family counselling and therapy. ┬áTreatments might include medication management, group and individual therapy sessions. ┬áDepending on length of stay some components of school may be required. Other supporting disciplines for this patient population may require support from Social Work, Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, Music Therapists, Speech Therapists, Child Life Specialists and Dieticians.
ÔÇó ┬á ┬áWell versed with electronic health record systems (SCM, Netcare, Connect Care, Epic) is an asset.

The candidate must be eligible for Licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta.
Must read, write, and speak English.
