Position Description and Responsibilities/Duties:

The Assistant Chief Medical Examiner is responsible for conducting investigations into unexplained natural deaths, unnatural deaths, and other deaths reportable to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) in accordance with the Fatality Inquiries Act (FIA). The purpose of these investigations is to establish the identify of the decedent together with the cause and manner of death.  The incumbent will perform external examinations and autopsies as part of these investigations, prepare reports documenting the findings and conclusions of death investigations, and provide expert testimony to criminal and civil courts.

Position On Call requirements:

Medical Examiners are on call after hours and weekends once every 6 weeks. They need to be reachable by cell phone to provide instructions/advice and answer questions for the investigators who attend the scenes of sudden deaths.

Qualifications Required:

The incumbent must be an M.D. with specialty training and certification in Anatomical or General (Clinical) Pathology and with an additional Fellowship year of training in Forensic Pathology, preferably with certification in Forensic Pathology (eg. American Board of Pathology, DMJ (Path)).  This includes knowledge of all aspects of death investigation, identification techniques, autopsy and external examination techniques, preparation of reports, and provision of expert testimony in a court of law.  Although experience is always an asset, this is an entry level position open to individuals who have just completed their Fellowship training in Forensic Pathology.  The incumbent must also be proficient in the use of computers (including use of the internet and Microsoft Office), must be licensed or eligible for medical licensure in the province of Alberta, and must have a valid driver's license.
