GRANDE PRAIRIE & GRANDE PRAIRIE REGIONAL HOSPITAL is seeking a General Surgeon who is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada (FRCSC) or FRCSC eligible with experience in community general surgery, encompassing a wide variety of elective, urgent, and emergent surgical pathologies. 

Experience in laparoscopic surgery and training in ERCP (or a willingness to obtain training) is essential, while experience with EUS would be considered an asset.

Willing to travel on a regular basis to outlying communities to provide surgical services to ongoing programs of the department.

The Surgeon will have Alberta Health Services hospital privileges.  The position will include hospital call.

Duties include, but may not be limited to:
ÔÇó Reside in and have as his/her primary residence, Grande Prairie
ÔÇóEstablish and maintain a full-time practice within the community
ÔÇóProvide hospital and call assistance as per call schedule, including full time participation in the general surgery on-call schedule for the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital
ÔÇó Provide surgical consultative services (beyond primary community of practice) either in-person or utilizing Tele-Medicine or another form of telecommunication
ÔÇó Contribute to and participate in teaching programs and activities.
ÔÇó Contribute to and participate in other administrative duties as assigned.

The successful candidate may choose to operate their business by joining an existing practice or by opening their own practice. This is the candidate's business choice and will not be managed through the recruitment process.

The Grande Prairie Regional Hospital is a new "State-of-the-Art" 194 bed acute care facility with a busy emergency department, ICU, NICU and specialty services in OB/Gyn, orthopedic surgery, general surgery, ophthalmology, ENT, urology, palliative care, pediatrics, and psychiatry; hosting over 10,000 discharges; including radiation therapy services, further increasing the capacity to provide services to the people of Northwestern Alberta and Northeastern British Columbia - Virtual Tour - Grande Prairie Regional Hospital

Hospital Statistics (2021-22): Deliveries: 1,456 Discharges: 8,691 Emergency Room Visits: 46,138 O.R. Procedures: 13,451 & Endoscopy: 11,010  

Radiology Services: Diagnostic Imaging Ultrasound Computerized Tomography (CT) Scan Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

Laboratory Hours of Operation: M-F 7-4:15, SS 10-2 Kidney Dialysis Unit

Cancer Treatment Services Available on Site

Qualifications: 

Educational Requirements:

  • Registration with the Royal College of Canada is required, FRC(S)C or eligibility.
  • Registration with the CPSA or proof of Eligibility for Alberta Licensure (required with application).
  • Preference will be given to applicants who do not require or have completed the CPSA Preliminary Clinical Assessment.
