Job Summary:

Correctional Health Services is inviting applications for a Psychiatrist to work at the Edmonton Remand Center (ERC) and Fort Saskatchewan Correctional Center (FSCC). 

A multidisciplinary team of nurses, social workers, pharmacists, nurse practitioners, dentists, psychologists, addiction counsellors, mental health therapists, and general practitioners work alongside psychiatrists at each facility to provide essential health services including emergency care, diagnosis and treatment of acute or chronic illness, medication administration, mental health services, urgent or emergent ophthalmologic services, urgent or emergent dental care, and health promotion and disease prevention.

While maintaining an independent practice, the successful applicant will engage in outpatient clinical services in these facilities. Specifically, this opportunity is to provide minimum of one half-day clinic per week (4 hour clinics). Additional opportunities exist to provide virtual services to the other Provincial Correctional Facilities.

Responsibilities / Accountabilities:

  1. Provide psychiatric assessment, diagnosis and treatment to patients in the correctional facility in compliance with the standards, guidelines and requirements of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta, the Canadian Psychiatric Association, AHS Medical Staff Bylaws and Rules, and applicable AHS Policy.
  1. Deliver services during 4 hour Clinics scheduled at mutually agreeable time with the correctional facilityÔÇÖs Health Services Manager.
    • If mutually agreed upon, the Psychiatrist may provide virtual services to patients at other Provincial Correctional Facilities.
  1. Liaise with the AHS Correctional Health Services Manager and/or the AHS Facilities Medical Director for Correctional Health Services in regard to planning for absences. The psychiatrist is responsible for finding psychiatric coverage during their absence.
  1. Respond to phone calls from the correctional facility regarding psychiatric patients from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday to Friday, excluding statutory holidays in a reasonable amount of time.
  1. Remain fully informed on the developments concerning the psychiatric condition of acutely ill patients in cooperation with all other health care providers.
  1. Prescribe medications in compliance with the AHS Correctional Health Services formulary to patients in the correctional facility.
  1. Identify opportunities for policy and practice improvements through participation in Quality Assurance Reviews, accreditation and quality improvement opportunities.
  1. Promote good health practices for patients.
  1. Required to provide a recent (within 90 days) Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) clearance (Criminal Record Check),  vulnerable sector security check, and participate in a correctional centre security orientation.

Reporting Relationship:

The practitioner will report to the Facilities Medical Director, Correctional Health. 

Qualifications: 

Candidates must be certified in Psychiatry with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (FRCPC), hold or be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta and hold or be eligible for an appointment to the AHS Medical Staff.
