Alberta Health Services, Central Zone, and the Department of Neurology at the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre, invites applications for a Neurologist with special interest in Multiple Sclerosis to establish a full-time practice in the community of Red Deer. The successful candidate would join the established Neuroscience team of 5 Neurologists and be expected to cover acute care for patients admitted to the Neurology ward and do consults in the ER and on other units of the hospital.  In addition to MS, the position provides an excellent opportunity for participation in general neurology and other specialty clinics. On-call coverage is required. This position would also participate in educating staff and residents as needed. 

 

The Central Alberta MS Clinic offers an integrated interdisciplinary approach to MS Care in an outpatient setting.  The team includes Nurses, Social Worker, Occupational Therapist and Dietitian who are all MS Certified.  In addition, there is timely access to Neuro Physiotherapy, Speech Language Pathology, Urology, Ophthalmology and Mental Health services.  The clinic is located at the Red Deer Regional Hospital and currently serves approximately 800 clients.   The Central Zone is geographically dispersed over 60,000 square kilometers and has a population of over 400,000.  With one of the highest rates of MS in the world, this region has an estimated 1800 people living with MS.

  

Responsibilities include but not limited to:

  • Reside in and have as his/her primary residence within the community of Red Deer, or immediate surrounding area;
  • Establish and maintain full time community based practice within the community; 
  • Obtain and maintain an AHS Medical Staff Appointment and appropriate privileges to provide the Services;
  • Provide call assistance as per call schedules, including full time participation in the Neurology call schedule, as required;
  • Abide by the AHS Medical Staff Bylaws, the AHS Medical Staff Rules and AHS policies;
  • Participate in quality improvement programs and initiatives undertaken within the Zone Clinical Department of Internal Medicine;
  • Participate in relevant Continuing Medical Education (CME) programs;
  • Contribute to and participate in other administrative responsibilities, as assigned;
  • Work collaboratively with peers and care team colleagues in support of patient care

  

Once chosen, the successful candidate may choose to operate their business by joining an existing independent outpatient practice or form an independent outpatient office of their own. This is the candidate's independent business decision and will not be managed through the recruitment process.

Required Qualifications:

  • Have or be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (required with application);
  • Have or be eligible for certification with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada Certification (RCPSC);

  

Desired Qualifications:

  • Must have recent and relevant experience in all areas of practice required, where the candidate has been the Most Responsible Physician;
  • Have subspecialty certification or equivalent in Multiple Sclerosis, or currently be enrolled in a Multiple Sclerosis Residency Program;
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS);
