The University of Alberta, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, Department of Medicine, Division of Cardiology in partnership with Alberta Health Services and Covenant Health, invites applications for a Cardiac Intensivist to be based at the University of Alberta Hospital and Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute.  Located in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, the Faculty has been internationally recognized as among the world’s top 50 medical schools and as one of Canada’s premier health-education institutions.

The University of Alberta's Division of Cardiology is an integral part of the Department of Medicine and the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute, a state-of-the-art facility that provides tertiary and quaternary cardiac care services for the City of Edmonton, Northern Alberta, and parts of British Columbia, Yukon, Nunavut, Northwest Territories and portions of Saskatchewan.  The University of Alberta and Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute are home to some of the premier Cardiac Critical Care, ACS, Heart Failure and Advanced Heart Failure programs in the country with its advanced Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU) caring for the full spectrum of critically ill cardiac patients including advanced ventilatory support, renal replacement therapy, hemodynamic monitoring, percutaneous mechanical support capabilities and overflow post Cardiac Surgery patients. In addition, we host one of the largest Mechanical Assist Program and Heart Transplant programs in Canada.  The Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute is unique, providing both Pediatric and Adult Care.

The successful recruit will join a group of 36 cardiologists including 10 other CICU physicians.  In keeping with our vision statement of exemplary patient care, discovery and education; the successful candidate will have the opportunity to grow and develop in a premier institution with a very successful Cardiac Critical Care program. Candidates with a particular interest and success in Critical Care education will be sought.

 

Key accountabilities of the Cardiac Intensivist will include but will not be limited to: Cardiac Intensive Care Unit and in-patient cardiology attending, Outpatient General Clinic, Emergency Triage, and equitable share of Division of Cardiology undergraduate and postgraduate teaching responsibilities.

The successful applicant will be expected to apply for a Clinical Academic Colleague Appointment in the Department of Medicine, University of Alberta, which will be considered under a separate process through the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry.

In accordance with Alberta Health Services' Immunization of Workers for COVID-19 Policy, new hires will be required to be fully immunized against COVID-19 prior to their first day of practice. Full immunization status is achieved when 14 days have passed after the second dose of a two-dose vaccine, or the first dose of a single-dose vaccine. The successful candidate will have an MD degree, or equivalent.  They will be eligible for certification in Cardiology with the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada.  As well, they will be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA) and have Specialty training in Critical Care Medicine consisting of either eligible Critical Care Medicine certification with Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada or at least 1 year of dedicated intensive care training in either an accredited or non-accredited fellowship program. Candidates should be committed to education and collaborative research.  Additional professional training or previous work experience in  other academic endeavours including  (but not limited to) education, research, administration, ethics, informatics, or patient quality and safetywould be welcomed.
