The University of Alberta, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, Department of Medicine, Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology in partnership with Alberta Health Services, invites applications for a Clinical Gastroenterologist to be based at the Sturgeon Community Hospital.

 

 

Located in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, the Faculty has been internationally recognized as among the world’s top 50 medical schools and as one of Canada’s premier health-education institutions.  The University is currently home to 39,000 students and 15,000 faculty and staff.

 

 

The Division of Gastroenterology currently has 2 MD members at the Sturgeon Community Hospital.  The Division of Gastroenterology, University of Alberta, is one of the largest gastroenterology, hepatology, endoscopy, motility, and nutrition centers in Canada. US News & World Report in their 2022 Best Universities Report ranked Gastroenterology and Hepatology No. 2 in Canada and No. 28 in the world. It manages leading-edge clinical, basic and translational research programs involving 45 graduate and undergraduate students; over 3 million dollars in basic and clinical research funding annually and has developed the Centers of Excellence for Gastrointestinal Inflammation and Immunity Research (CEGIIR) and Gastrointestinal and Liver Disease Research (GILDR). The Sturgeon Community Hospital in St. Albert, AB, has 167 beds with General Internal Medicine, Surgery, Obs/Gyne, ICU, CCU, and ER services. The Division of Gastroenterology at the Sturgeon Community Hospital has a specialized consultation service with an Endoscopy suite conducting 4500 endoscopies annually.

 

 

The successful candidate will be an MD (or equivalent) with training in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology from a recognized training center and be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA). The qualified individual will have fellowship training in Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

 

 

 

Key accountabilities of the clinical Gastroenterologist will include participation in all aspects of inpatient and outpatient Gastroenterology healthcare including but not limited to, city-wide night-, weekend- and holiday- call, and administrative tasks.  The successful candidate will have excellent communication skills with an affable personality.  The preferred candidate will be a physician who has experience practicing in the Edmonton zone.

 

 

The successful applicant will be expected to apply for a Clinical Academic Colleague Appointment in the Department of Medicine, University of Alberta, which will be considered under a separate process through the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry.
