The Role
The Critical Care Resident involves delivering direct clinical services within facilities Critical Care Services. Primarily focused on enhancing patient care in the Emergency Department (ED), Intensive Care (ICU), Anaesthetics, and Perioperative Care, the Critical Care Resident undertakes clinical management and consultation services for all Critical Care patients. This may include working under direct supervision or receiving support over the telephone from respective Consultants. Additionally, the Critical Care Resident actively participates in quality assurance initiatives within the designated Departments.

The Facility 
Operates as a sub-regional health service catering to a population of approximately 100,000 individuals. In a given year, the facility handles around 29,000 emergency department attendances, admits 19,000 patients, conducts 7,000 surgical procedures, and facilitates nearly 700 deliveries. The Critical Care Unit, encompassing Intensive Care, High Dependency, and Coronary Care, currently comprises 8 beds.
Annually, the Critical Care Unit admits over 1,000 patients, with approximately 8% classified as Intensive Care (ICU), 20% as Coronary Care (CCU), and the remainder as High Dependency (HDU) patients. On average, one elective post-surgical admission occurs daily.
  • The position provides a foundation towards advancing into specialty training programs offered by
    Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (ACEM)
    College of Intensive Care Medicine of Australia and New Zealand (CICM)
    Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA)
  • Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) and/or ACRRM

The Requirements
  • M.B.B.S. or equivalent
  • General Registration with AHPRA
  • At least three years (PGY3) of clinical experience in Australian Health Service setting
  • Demonstrated interest in pursuing specialty training in Intensive Care, Emergency Care, Anaesthetic Care or General Practice
  • Advanced life support and emergency resuscitation skills with commensurate procedural skills.
