We have a growing theatre complex, and are looking for talented and dedicated NQODP's to join our team. We are looking for ODP's that are looking to graduate this year.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Your Responsibilities

Registered with the HCPC or applied

Maintain a variety of shift patterns, including nights and weekends.

Ensure that accurate records and information systems are maintained.

Ensure the safe control, custody, and administration of all drugs within the perioperative area in accordance with Trust Policies and national legislation.

Assist the Team Leader to ensure that clinical practices accurately reflect trust values

Inform Team Leader/Theatre Manager if there is a change in circumstance which may affect safe and competent practice.

Assist the Team Leader to actively lead in the development of their specialised areas within the peri-operative services.

Attend mandatory training sessions as required.

Able to demonstrate relevant IT and keyboard skills to enable electronic data collection and communication.

Effectively communicate with all disciplines, patients/clients and relatives.

Ensure incident forms are completed and acted upon and the manager is informed accordingly.

Assist the team leader to effectively lead a multidisciplinary team under pressure in, at times, a highly stressful environment, including emergency situations as required.

Ensure the provision of a safe working environment for the staff, patients and visitors at all times in line with the Health and Safety at work act.

Ensure adequate stock levels of consumables are maintained.

To provide high quality peri-operative and post-operative care to all patients by assessing care needs and developing, implementing, and evaluating them without supervision. 

Ensures all equipment is cleaned, checked daily, and maintained and takes appropriate action with faulty equipment as per company policy.

Be responsible for the accurate accounting of all disposable and non-disposable instrumentation before, during and following a clinical procedure.

Participates and supports training in new equipment.

Ensure the safe positioning and transfer of patients within the department in accordance with trust and theatre policy and procedures.

Ensure availability and readiness of all equipment and instrumentation for all cases.

Ensure the work area is cleaned and prepared in accordance with infection control policy.
Participates in audit or research.

Ensure that the handling of specimens is carried out safely and the recording of collection is accurate.

To maintain standards of infection control within the unit and during clinical care and to assist patients to maintain their own infection control needs

What we’re looking for
 
We are currently seeking highly motivated individuals to join our expanding team, our services currently cover Neurosciences, Cardiac, ENT OMF vascular thoracic CEPOD trauma HPB GI Robotics, Pead’s including Recovery, Endoscopy, Interventional radiology, we also have a hybrid suit, as well as being a regional trauma centre for Southampton. 

The operating theatre suite is currently expanding, currently our theatres comprise 27 centre block theatres, neurosciences theatres, also satellite locations, providing a range of services from cardiac (four theatres) to paediatrics (seven theatres).

Our major trauma theatres and elective orthopaedic theatres are innovative and ground-breaking within the trauma orthopaedic field, and our neurosciences team are at the forefront of their specialty with surgeons who are recognised by fellow professionals as leaders in their field.

Qualifications, knowledge and experience

  • Registered nurse or ODP on relevant part of the register
  • Degree or equivalent experience
  • Has the ability to assist in carrying out the transfer of a patient through the intraoperative phase of perioperative care, giving concise accurate handover
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the skills required to support learners in practice and to create a positive learning environment.
  • Practices and promotes the use of evidence-based practice
  • Knowledge of current issues within acute health service
  • Understanding of personal accountability
  • Aptitude for caring for the anaesthetised and/or acutely unwell patient
Desirable criteria
  • Aptitude for caring for the anaesthetised and/or acutely unwell patient
  • Relevant resus qualification, ie Immediate Life Support
  • Experience of working within relevant care setting
  • Specialist theatre work-based learning course, or mentorship course, post-qualification
  • Interest in research to promote good practice

Getting to Work

Application can be made for parking on site at UHS or through one of the park and ride schemes. This will be based on specific criteria to determine eligibility for site parking as this can be very limited.  UHS encourages staff to utilise other green methods of getting to work such as cycling or walking where possible.
