About the role

  • Participate in clinical duties where appropriate; this includes involvement in ward rounds, outpatient clinics and an after-hours on call roster.
  • Deliver expert care of patients with complex infectious diseases; this will take the form of clinical service as part of a roster.
  • Interact with treating teams as required to ensure that Infectious Diseases Unit advice is incorporated in care plans to achieve optimal patient outcomes whilst meeting antibiotic stewardship goals.
  • Actively contribute to the Antimicrobial Stewardship Program. This may include regular AMS review rounds, prescribing support, and clinician education.
  • The supervision and training of registrars in Infectious Diseases.

Role requirements
FRACP
(or equivalent acceptable to the Royal Australasian College of Physicians) and registrable as a specialist in Infectious Diseases with the Medical Board of Australia.

About the department
The successful applicant will join a team of five Infectious Diseases Physicians and Clinical Microbiologists, delivering tertiary inpatient, consult, outpatient and AMS services. The team is supported by two ID Advanced Trainees, 2 Microbiology Trainees and junior registrars.

Townsville University Hospital provides extensive specialist services, including neurosurgery, cardiothoracic surgery, oncology, a haematological stem cell transplant unit, and a recently established renal transplant unit.

The clinical load is varied including tropical infections, such as melioidosis, Q-fever, brucellosis and rickettsial infections.

There is extensive opportunity for clinical teaching and research, with strong affiliate links to James Cook University and the Australian Institute for Tropical Health and Medicine.
