The Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, in partnership with Alberta Health Services, is inviting applications for the Academic Division Director of Nephrology in the Department of Medicine, and Clinical Section Head in the Department of Neurosciences. Located in Edmonton, Alberta, the Faculty has been internationally recognized among the world’s top 50 medical schools, and as one of Canada’s premier health-education institutions. The University is currently home to more than 38,000 students with more than 15,000 faculty and staff.

 

The Division of Nephrology at the University of Alberta is focused on ensuring excellence in clinical practice, research and teaching.

The Northern Alberta Renal Program (NARP) is the largest renal failure program administered by any single center in Canada.  Innovative clinical programs and clinical research address the unique challenges of our very large geographic catchment area.  All 32 Nephrologists in the city of Edmonton contribute to the clinical teaching mission, delivered at 3 major teaching hospitals.  21 Nephrologists, located at the University of Alberta Hospital hold full-time faculty positions at the University of Alberta and contribute to medical research spanning the spectrum from fundamental science through epidemiology, health economics and health services research.   The Division enjoys a strong international reputation in the areas of transplantation and dialysis research. The training program in Nephrology is fully accredited and usually supports 3-5 subspecialty trainees at any given time.  The graduate program in the Department of Medicine further supports the training of MSc and PhD students with specialization in Experimental or Translational Medicine.

 

The Division Director and Section Head is responsible for all recruitment, research, education, and clinical services of Nephrology at the University of Alberta in the Edmonton Zone.  She or he is expected to be a leader who will further develop the Division to remain among the top Nephrologist groups worldwide and advance the clinical, research and educational mandate within the Department of Medicine.

 

The Alberta Health Services Clinical Section Head for Nephrology is responsible for the delivery of all Nephrology services in the Edmonton Zone. This includes four major urban teaching and four smaller community hospitals.  The University Hospital, furthermore, is the major referral center for Northern Alberta and the Northern regions of adjoining provinces and territories.  The Nephrology Section Head is responsible for developing, maintaining and implementing service plans to meet current and future demands for Neurological care in the Edmonton Zone and its referral regions.

 

The Department is seeking a dynamic, visionary leader who will be supportive of all elements in the Division. The successful candidate will be an active advocate for the Division and will be collegial and consultative in his or her leadership to drive educational innovation, maximize research output within the Division and lead strategic growth initiatives. 

 

 

He or she will be recognized internationally through scholarly accomplishment in research and teaching.  Preference will be given to individuals with administrative experience in an academic setting.

Qualifications: 

The successful candidate will be an MD (or equivalent) with relevant clinical qualifications in Nephrology recognized by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada or equivalent certification body.  Candidate must be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA) as clinical service is required as part of this appointment. The successful candidate will be offered a contingent tenured appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor within the Department, which is in accordance with the University of Alberta Faculty Agreement and offers a comprehensive benefits package.
