About you:

You are a qualified ATSI Health Worker with high-level understanding and knowledge of and sensitivity to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, including historical and current determinants for health outcomes and community protocols. You have the ability to deliver primary health care programs, planning, problem solving and coordination skills in the management of consumer care and are motivated to work in a sexual health team and support our work with our other core client groups: men who have sex with men, sex workers, young people, those considering or who identify as transgender, women accessing information and referral for termination of unwanted pregnancy, people who use drugs and people living with blood borne viruses.

Your opportunity: 

The Advanced Health Worker  provides culturally safe and effective sexual health service delivery and program management that focuses on health promotion, prevention, early detection and management of sexual health problems, Blood Borne Viruses (BBV) and Sexually Transmissible Infections (STIs) with men, women and young people in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities with full accountabilities and delegation of a Registered Nurse / CNC to provide a high standard of care to support the delivery of an efficient and effective sexual health programs as part of the Cairns Sexual Health team.

Your role: 

  • Conduct effective and efficient comprehensive sexual health care by undertaking screening, care, management, education, contact tracing, and health promotion activities under direction of Registered Nurse / CNC.
  • Deliver advanced primary health care programs such as education, contract tracing, detection, prevention, and management and STI screening activities according to the needs of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities in a confidential and non-judgemental manner using culturally acceptable strategies.
  • Undertake basic observations (Temp, Pulse, BP, and Heart Rate) in the Sexual Health clinic whilst testing and screening patients for STIs and BBVs according to community needs under direction of Registered Nurse / CNC.
  • Collect pathology specimens (blood, urine & sputum) for diagnostic purposes as required under direction of Registered Nurse / CNC.
  • Develop positive relationships, liaise with key stakeholders and community organisations.
  • Advocate, liaise, network, and refer to appropriate NGO's, ILO's and the Multidisciplinary Team in collaboration with and under direction of Registered Nurse / CNC to ensure that the health needs of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities are being met.
