The job offers an opportunity to gain experience in Intensive Care Medicine with the possibility of:

1. gaining GMC-approved CESR specialist registration in single speciality ICM. 
2. 50:50 research and clinical role. Out of hours work will be focussed on the middle grade (airway) rota for the GICU and weekday working will be dedicated to a research project with full support from our experienced research group.
3. 50:50 clinical and FUSIC fellowship role. Out of hours work will be focussed on the middle grade (airway) rota for the GICU and weekday working will be dedicated to FICE training, supported by our experienced Consultant FICE mentors.

Main duties of the job

Option 1: CESR- Standard elements of ICM training

  • The successful candidate will join the middle grade rota for other Drs in training and have access to competency certification in General ICM clinical activities. This is suitable for those training in ICM, in Anaesthetics or in similar specialities.
  • Once established, (after at least 6 months), and depending on the wishes of the candidate, there is opportunity to transfer to other areas, (Cardiac ICM, Neuro ICM, Paediatric ICM and General Medicine) as required for single speciality training equivalence. This could lead to the opportunity to develop a GMC-approved CESR pathway for Specialist Registration in single speciality ICM.

Option 2: Clinical and Research (50:50)

  • This post offers opportunity to develop research skills with 50:50 clinical and research commitments. UHS has an expanding Research portfolio in Critical Care and Perioperative Medicine. There are options to do research in the fields of early mobilisation and rehabilitation, oxygen therapy, acute lung injury, surfactant therapy, mitochondrial capacity in critical illness, gut microbiome in critical illness, delirium, and nutrition.
  • These posts provide an opportunity for a Senior Fellow to pursue research projects at all levels, involvement in ongoing studies in the department, pursue personal research interests.
  • Also opportunities to become NIHR associate principal investigator for several clinical trials in both critical care and perioperative medicine

Option 3: Clinical and FUSIC Fellowship (50:50)

  • These posts offer an opportunity to develop expertise in FUSIC with 50:50 clinical and FUSIC fellowship commitments. Our department is enthusiastic about point-of-care ultrasound as an imaging modality for clinical care.
  • We have several accredited clinicians who will provide training and education in FUSIC Heart and Lung HD modules to complete Intensive Care Society (ICS) certification within six months.
  • We also have experience using point-of-care ultrasound for research, having completed a recent study of nebulised surfactant in covid pneumonitis.

In addition to 1:1 teaching, a weekly transthoracic echocardiography meeting in our cardiology department, and we also run bi-monthly governance sessions

More on the team

UHS is a highly progressive Trust and the tertiary referral and teaching centre for a large area of the south of England and the Channel Islands. It has a 32 bed General Intensive Care Unit and admits around 1800 patient per year. The Unit has a recently opened and state of the art patient area, along with an older estate that is awaiting similar refurbishment in the 12 months.

The partnership with the University of Southampton has a global reputation as a centre of excellence in anaesthesia and perioperative medicine research. The GICU department has an active research group at many levels, and great enthusiasm for involving all trainees and Fellows in the research programme.

We are a large department but there is a culture of collaboration and co-operation. Person specification

Qualifications and training

Essential criteria
  • Full GMC Registration
  • Medical Degree
  • Core Training in a relevant speciality (e.g., ICM or Anaesthesia)
Desirable criteria
  • MRCP, FRCS, MCEM or similar
  • Current ATLS or ALS
  • Qualification in Medical Education

Previous or relevant experience

Essential criteria
  • At least 2 years’ experience of work in the NHS or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in Research activity or able to demonstrate commitment and enthusiasm (Essential for research: clinical 50 50 option)
  • Experience of FUSIC or able to demonstrate commitment and enthusiasm to learn (Essential for FUSIC: clinical 50 50 option)
  • Experience of Quality Improvement or Audit
  • Experience in teaching / training other professionals, including SIM

Aptitudes and skills

Essential criteria
  • Reliable, punctual, hardworking, enthusiastic
  • Demonstrates clarity and breadth in use of verbal and written communications in relation to our patient group
  • Basic IT skills

Getting to Work

Application can be made for parking on site at UHS or through one of the park and ride schemes.
