Job overview

Due to the expansion of our cardiac surgery service, we are looking for highly motivated band 8a Senior Clinical Perfusion Scientists to join the team within our Cardiovascular and Thoracic care group which is acknowledged as a regional centre of excellence at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust (UHS). Successful candidate will be conversant with cardiac surgical techniques performed on neonatal, paediatric and adults, including cell salvage, point of care blood analysis, ECMO, Percutaneous Hepatic perfusion and research. However, applicants who do not meet the above criteria will be offered a full and comprehensive training package to upskill in the relevant areas.

Currently, the cardiac team undertakes 1800 adults and 400 paediatric procedures per year within four cardiac theatres. You must be accredited by the Society of Perfusionists of Great Britain & Ireland and registered with the College of Clinical Perfusionists of Great Britain & Ireland. This role includes a £5,000 Recruitment and Retention Premium.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

What we're looking for

You will be a dynamic, motivated team player and possess excellent verbal and written communication skills, with empathy and compassion at the heart of the care that you provide. You will be expected to deliver high quality care within the framework of a multi-disciplinary team. You will be supported by an experienced inter-professional team.

The successful applicant will be expected to carry out various administrative duties associated with the role and will be delegated additional responsibilities as required. Full participation in the department on-call rota is essential. The department offers a 37.5 hour, 3-day working week. Opportunities for locum work are also available working in partnership with NHS professionals.

In light of this we are offering a £208 (pro rata) per month payment and a £2500 (pro rata) retention payment to be paid after 1 year of service to show our commitment to you. In exchange, you will be committed to remaining within your allocated area for a minimum of 12 months, working in partnership with like-minded healthcare professionals in developing others whilst actively contributing to patient safety, experience and outcomes.

Recruitment payments are not applicable to individuals who are moving from Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust or any NHS staff working within Hampshire or the Isle of Wight. Qualifications, knowledge and experience

Essential criteria
  • MSc in Clinical perfusion science or equivalent knowledge and experience. A flexible and innovative approach to practice which is appropriate to the needs of the client patient group and consistent with the aims of the Trust.
  • Society of Clinical Perfusion Scientists Accreditation.
  • Full registration with the College of Clinical Perfusion Scientists.
  • Fully conversant with all aspects of adult cardiopulmonary bypass procedures and associated techniques.
  • Be fully conversant with specialist techniques and perfusion procedures as required by individual patients such as, left heart bypass, cerebral perfusion (both antegrade and retrograde), vacuum assisted venous drainage, ventricular assist devices and blood conservation techniques
  • To demonstrate highly developed auditory, visual and perceptive skills in dealing with a mass of information
  • A flexible and innovative approach to practice which is appropriate to the needs of the client patient group and consistent with the aims of the Trust.
Desirable criteria
  • A broad range of experience in neonatal, Paediatric and GUCH perfusion.
  • Paediatric perfusion experience
  • Paediatric ECMO training course.

Getting to Work

Application can be made for parking on site at UHS or through one of the park and ride schemes. This will be based on specific criteria to determine eligibility for site parking as this can be very limited.  UHS encourages staff to utilise other green methods of getting to work such as cycling or walking where possible.
