Fort St. John

Fort St. John is known as “The Energetic City,” which reflects the large resource base of oil, natural gas, forestry and agriculture. Overlooking the Peace River, the town of Fort St John is located above the Peace River Valley, and serves as the capital of the Peace River district. The population of Fort St. John is over 21,400 but it services an area of approximately 70,000. The community is the hub of the Northeast with a cultural centre and library, theatre, and art space. Practice Details:

Northern Health is seeking a General Internal Medicine Specialist. This position will be a mix of office based, hospital consult, and ICU coverage. The ICU is relatively low acuity.

There is presently one Internist in Fort St. John and one Internist in Dawson Creek (70 km away). The goal is to have 3-4 Internists in Fort St. John.

Fort St John Hospital is a new state-of-the-art 55 bed hospital serving a population of approximately 23,000, and is one of two hospitals serving a catchment area of approximately 70,000. The facility offers services including diagnostics, surgery, acute care, ICU, maternity, a community cancer centre, community hemodialysis, visiting specialists clinic, and a prenatal clinic. Other local specialists include Psychiatry, Obstetrics and Gynecology, General Surgery, Orthopedic Surgery, Radiology, and Pathology.

Recruitment Incentive: $20,000
Moving Allowance: $9,000 - $15,000 (TBD)
Retention Flat Fee: $32,931.30

Rural Education Action Plan (REAP) available.
Rural Continuing Medical Education (RCME) available.
Moving allowance available: $15,000 if moving from outside of Canada; $12,000 if moving within Canada but outside of BC; $9,000 if moving within BC. Rural Subsidiary Agreement (RSA) funding is subject to change without notice.

The Fort St. John Hospital has 44 Acute Care beds and 124 residential beds and is equipped to handle 22,000 ER visits per year. Some more highlights about the hospital:
• Endoscopy suite, 2 state-of-the-art operating rooms,
plus a procedure room
• Ambulatory clinics including Cancer and Hemodialysis
• Medical and Surgical inpatient rooms (40 beds)
• 3 Intensive care units
• Minor surgeries
• 7 single Maternity rooms for Labour, Delivery, and Post-Partum
Fort St. John also has the Health Unit and Primary Care Clinic which serve the community.
