An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the successful Women's services at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust, as a Locum Consultant in Obstetrics, Maternal and Fetal Medicine. This fixed term Maternity cover posts aims to provide consultant cover to drive further development and aspirations of the tertiary services in the Wessex region. 

The regional maternal and fetal medicine service has close collaboration with related specialties such as genetics, paediatric cardiology, neonatology and neonatal surgery, adult endocrinology, cardiology and haematology. We operate as a clinical network with hospitals across the Wessex region to provide consistent high quality care. The Southampton Maternity Service has 5500 births per year and is committed to a multi-professional team approach as determined by the individual needs of the woman. Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Responsibilities

WHAT YOU’LL DO:

The role is intended to support leadership in all aspects of patient care, safety, and clinical governance.

You will support the resident and non-resident consultant obstetrician on call rota and provide consultant presence on the labour ward, for outpatient and inpatient antenatal care and elective Caesarean sections.

You will be expected to deliver clinical excellence within Obstetrics and Maternal-Fetal Medicine.

You will contribute to regional multidisciplinary education and training initiatives.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

We are keen to hear from ambitious individuals who have completed obstetric training and potentially additionally sub-specialty training in maternal and fetal medicine, including experience in complex antenatal and intrapartum care. You should have high level skills in managing complex pregnancies. 

A willingness to learn and work within a constantly changing environment is necessary together with the ability to remain calm under pressure.

The ability to actively support and engage with ongoing research themes and projects in line with the expectations of a vibrant academic hospital and to support the subspecialty trainees in achieving research requirements.

Experience in leading service change and the training of medical and non-medical staff is also desirable.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

The successful candidate will be employed under the terms and conditions of service for Consultants (England) 2003.

Qualifications and training

Essential criteria
  • Full GMC registration
  • MRCOG
  • ATSM or equivalent in Advanced Labour Ward Practice
Desirable criteria
  • ATSM or equivalent demonstrating special interest in obstetrics and gynaecology
  • Accredited GMC educational supervisor
  • Further higher degree
  • Evidence of research and publications
  • Entry on the Specialist Register or eligibility for entry within six months of the date of the advisory appointments committee

Previous or relevant experience

Essential criteria
  • Ability to manage a busy high risk labour ward and obstetrics and gynaecology emergencies independently
  • Previous experience of on call O&G as a senior resident in a high-risk maternity unit within the NHS
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in delivering formal undergraduate and/or postgraduate education

Aptitudes and skills

Essential criteria
  • Evidence and ability to communicate and liaise effectively with patients and colleagues (verbal and written communication skills in English)
  • Understanding of Clinical Governance and Quality Improvement
  • Good presentation and communication skills
Desirable criteria
  • Leadership Qualities; enthusiastic, flexible, able to adapt to change and to lead service developments
  • Evidence of previous relevant experience to make significant developments and contributions to established services with demonstrable output

Getting to Work

Application can be made for parking on site at UHS or through one of the park and ride schemes. This will be based on specific criteria to determine eligibility for site parking as this can be very limited.  UHS encourages staff to utilise other green methods of getting to work such as cycling or walking where possible.
