Alberta Precision Laboratories (APL), Community Services, is seeking a full time Anatomic Pathology (AP) Clinical Lead to be located at our Base Lab location in Edmonton, Alberta. The Anatomic Pathology Clinical Lead will assume strategic leadership and guidance for the overall organization and coordination of the Community Services Anatomic Pathology Department and work directly with the Anatomic Pathology Clinical Director to ensure a consistent provincial approach.

Alberta Precision Laboratories (APL) is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Alberta Health Services (AHS). APL is the sole provider of lab services in the province of Alberta. APL’s focus is on patients first - ensuring the safety, accessibility and stability of lab services across Alberta. We are supported by expert consultation to assist care providers and users of the service. The depth and breadth of medical expertise results in a premium level of testing quality, service, follow up care, and support to our customers and their patients.

Job Summary & Responsibilities

  • Together with the AP Director, ensure department operating procedures and reporting criteria meet accepted quality standards.
  • Oversee quality control and proficiency testing programs specific to the AP department at their site and ensure ongoing compliance with accreditation requirements.
  • Identify problems and vulnerabilities within QC and testing programs and ensure appropriate corrective action is taken to resolve problems at their sites and communicate with the AP Director as needed.
  • Identify the need for improved technology, equipment, and methodologies to ensure DynaLIFE maintains its reputation for excellence in laboratory medicine.
  • Consult on specific patient scenarios and cases and provide support to the technical area at their site for further workup and troubleshooting of aberrant results.
  • Provide support to community physicians regarding test results and treatment options for patients.
  • Actively participates in local, regional, and provincial committees and attends required meetings.
  • The expectation for this 3-year Lead position is to alternate Lead and Director in subsequent terms for three years.
  • This position will revert to a full-time Anatomic/General Pathologist role at the end of the full 6- year term of AP leadership.
  • 0.2 FTE of protected time will be allotted to this position for administrative duties. The remainder of the FTE will be dedicated to clinical work. 

Qualifications

Qualifications include possessing, or being eligible for, the Canadian Fellowship in AP or GP of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons and must qualify for licensure in Alberta. Additional fellowship training in surgical pathology or expertise in leadership will be considered an asset. The successful incumbent will also be required to obtain the appropriate professional liability coverage.

Compensation

An excellent remuneration package including relocation assistance is provided. The pathologist will function as a contractor with APL. Starting remuneration is commensurate with the level of training and experience. Remuneration range for a Laboratory Physician / Pathologist in Alberta is $353,874.00 to $411,650.00.
