An exciting opportunity has a risen to lead the delivery of the Perioperative Care Service at University Hospital Southampton including perioperative medicine and pre-assessment at both Southampton and Lymington sites.
Perioperative care in Southampton has an international reputation for implementing and transformation of services such as CPET,  prehabilitation, pre-assessment, shared decision making clinics, surgery school and anaemia management with the aim of improving the outcome for patients having surgery.
The successful candidate will lead a large multidisciplinary team including Dietitians, Physiologists, Nursing, Administrative and other professionals alongside a specialist Consultant team. Across perioperative care over 14,000 outpatient appointments and over 1,000 day case appointments are performed per year.
You will be expected to provide clinical expertise for perioperative patients, supporting the various departments with complex escalation, leading MDT meetings and performing clinical decision making.
As a service we are a rapidly expanding service working closely with research teams and the transformation departments to provide innovative new services and support to ensure patients receive high quality perioperative treatments.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

You will oversee and provide clinical leadership for the day to day running of the Perioperative Medicine, CPET,  Prehabilitation, Preoperative Anaemia Service and Preassesment.
You will provide clinical expertise including virtual clinical assessment and screening of preoperative patients, regular prescribing (additional training can be provided if required) and support preassessment nurses with clinical decision making.
You will work closely with the Lead Consultants to deliver on transformation projects including digital patient screening, digital patient education packages, and service expansion.
You will be responsible for chairing MDT discussions for complex perioperative patients and supporting decision making and ensuring patients are appropriately managed.
You will oversee and manage the collection of data within the department and run reports on multiple databases to evaluate services.

We are looking for an experienced registered health care professional with an in-depth knowledge of elective surgical pathways and a track record of transforming services and implementing change. Evidence of leadership ability and managing a team. You must be able to travel independently between sites

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Relevant professional registration with NMC or HCPC
  • Educated to master’s degree level or equivalent level of knowledge to be assessed through evidence of relevant speciality training, experience or portfolio
  • Post graduate speciality specialist training.
  • Evidence of on-going personal and professional development
  • Advanced Communication Skills
  • Teaching and presentation aptitude or courses
Desirable criteria
  • Psychological Assessment course
  • Registered Non-Medical Prescriber

Previous or relevant experience necessary

Essential criteria
  • Extensive clinical experience of working within chosen speciality
  • Post Registration experience and proven evidence of leadership or change management
  • Broad awareness of wider Trust initiatives / pressures
  • Evidence of ability to change or initiate practice
  • Experience of managing change or transformation

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Leadership skills
  • Able to use initiative and give rationale for own decisions
  • Ability to work autonomously undertaking expanded roles
  • Able to prioritise and delegate appropriately
  • Basic keyboard skills with knowledge of Word, Excel and PowerPoint
