Clinical Oncology at University Hospital Southampton is a busy and successful department providing a regional multidisciplinary service for Head and Neck, Skull Base and CNS tumours including stereotactic and other advanced radiotherapy techniques.  We are looking for a Specialist to join our service and work alongside our inspiring consultant and multidisciplinary teams.

The role will focus on site-specific care in the outpatient and radiotherapy departments and will also include contributing to inpatient care. The post will provide training and experience in these specialised areas of Clinical Oncology including advanced radiotherapy techniques and systemic anti-cancer therapies.  The post-holder will provide an expert and autonomous level of practice, where appropriate, in keeping with the Specialist level of the role.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES

WHAT YOU’LL DO

The post will provide training and experience in specialised clinical oncology including external beam radiotherapy, chemotherapy, immunotherapy and other systemic therapies.  The post supports our established regional advanced radiotherapy services including cranial stereotactic radiotherapy.  The post-holder will contribute to the radiotherapy planning, peer review and on-treatment review for these services.

The majority of your time will be spent working with our site-specialist clinical oncology multidisciplinary teams in the outpatient and radiotherapy departments, but you will contribute to the senior support and coordination of specialist inpatient care.  There is no out of hours or on-call rota commitment. 

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

A doctor appointed to this grade:

  • Shall have full registration and Licence to Practice with the General Medical Council; and
  • Shall have completed a minimum of 12 years’ medical work (either continuous period or in aggregate) since obtaining a primary medical qualification of which a minimum of six years should have been in a relevant specialty in the Specialty Doctor and/or closed SAS grades. Equivalent years’ experience in a relevant specialty from other medical grades including from overseas will be accepted.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

The successful candidate will be employed under the terms and conditions of service  Specialist – England (2021)

Salary will be assessed in line with terms and conditions £83,945 – £95,275

Travelling expenses will not be paid for attending interview

Qualifications and training

Essential criteria
  • MRCP Part 1 & Part 2 written and PACES or equivalent
  • FRCR Parts 1, 2A and 2B or equivalent
  • Full GMC registration
Desirable criteria
  • Recognised training in academic oncology with postgraduate qualification

Previous or relevant experience

Essential criteria
  • Has completed a minimum of 12 years’ medical work since obtaining primary medical degree
  • Has completed a minimum of 6 years’ medical work in Clinical Oncology or a relevant related specialty
  • Experience of working with multidisciplinary teams
Desirable criteria
  • Broad experience in Acute Medicine
  • Publications
  • Experience of working within the NHS
  • Research and audit experience

Aptitudes and skills

  • Good clinical and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work within a multidisciplinary group
  • Excellent IT skills

Getting to Work

Application can be made for parking on site at UHS or through one of the park and ride schemes.
