Position Summary

We currently have an exciting opportunity for you to bring your excellent work ethic to our Outpatient Clinical Dietitian-Diabetes Education Clinic department.

Under the general direction of the Diabetes Nurse Educator, provides diabetes nutrition counseling to referred outpatients according to the guidelines established by the Diabetes Education Clinic and the Northern Health Authority. Instructs outpatients and their families/supports concerning nutritional requirements, food planning and preparation for diabetes management. Maintains liaison with medical, nursing and other health care workers concerning nutritional requirements and clinical diabetes meal plan regimes.

University Hospital of Northern BC (UHNBC) is the largest Acute Care facility within the Northern Health region, and a hub for specialized health services. It’s also a teaching hospital:
• Provides undergraduate physician training through the Northern Medical Program, run by the University of British Columbia and University of Northern British Columbia.
• Hosts residents in UBC’s Family Practice Residency Program
• Is a key clinical education site for nursing and many health sciences students at UNBC, the College of New Caledonia, BCIT and other institutions.
UHNBC has benefited from nearly $100 million in expansions, renovations and new equipment since 2001:
• Patient care addition with an expanded emergency room and updated ICU
• State-of-the-art maternal-child care centre (including a single room neonatal ICU)
• Facilities to accommodate undergraduate physician training
• MRI unit

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree from a recognized university with major in dietetics or nutrition and completion of a dietetic internship recognized by the Dietitians of Canada (DC) and the British Columbia Dietitians and Nutritionists Association (BCDNA).
• Current registration with the College of Dietitians of British Columbia.
• Member of the Diabetes Educator Section of the Canadian Diabetes Association.
• Recent related experience in Diabetes Education, including counseling, education and group facilitation.

Skills and Abilities:
• Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with outpatients and their families.
• Ability to work independently, quickly and accurately within the time limitations of the outpatients’ schedule.
• Ability to keep abreast of current developments and research in the field.
• Physical ability to perform duties of the position.
• Ability to operate related computer equipment.
• Coordinates activities and maintains liaison between medical staff and outpatients.
• Ability to provide education and counseling in a group or on an individual basis.
