Charge Nurse, Surgical Level 2 Care Unit

The Surgical Level 2 Care unit is an 11 bed tertiary care unit that provides support and treatment of adult Thoracic, ENT, Plastic, Urology, Vascular, Orthopedic, Trauma and General Surgery patients.

Position: Charge Nurse, Surgical Level 2 Care Unit

Region: London and Middlesex

Description: Reporting to the Manager, the Charge Nurse provides front-line leadership to support quality patient care by facilitating the day-to-day clinical functioning of the C5 200 Surgical Level 2 (Thoracic, ENT, Plastic, Urology, Vascular, Orthopedic, Trauma and General Surgery) Inpatient Unit in alignment with LHSC Values and Strategic priorities. The Charge Nurse, for unit safety reasons, may be required to take a patient assignment and provide direct patient care. In collaboration with the Manager, the Charge Nurse facilitates the smooth flow of patient access and care activities. This responsibility includes but is not limited to delegating and overseeing the care provided by the health care team; assigning, adjusting and overseeing work assignments of nursing , non-nursing and clerical staff; maintaining safe working conditions, advocating for the rights of patients, families and staff and supporting a culture of respect and professional accountability. The charge nurse will lead and facilitate family and patient care meetings as necessary. The Charge Nurse utilizes well-established clinical and critical thinking skills in providing direct patient care as required.
Qualifications:

  • Current Certificate of Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario
  • Current Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers course: BLS-HCP(C)
  • BScN preferred
  • Minimum of three (3) years of acute care nursing experience required
  • Minimum of two (2) years of surgical care nursing experience required
  • Proficiency with computer programs including Cerner PowerChart, Capacity Management, Microsoft Word, & Outlook; basic knowledge of Excel
  • Completion of Crucial Conversations/Crucial Confrontations courses, preferred
  • Demonstrated effective problem solving, critical thinking and conflict resolution skills
  • Demonstrated excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to provide and receive feedback in an open, respectful and constructive manner to actively participate in skill development of self and team members
  • Displays effective collaboration with interdisciplinary team members and interdependent units with the ability to express ideas clearly and confidently
  • Demonstrated teaching, coaching, mentorship skills and familiarity with the principles of change
  • Demonstrated initiative and decision-making in high change environment
  • Demonstrated knowledge of predictive care and ability to maintain predictive care board
  • Ability to recognize and constructively manage own feelings in challenging and emotionally charged situations
  • Demonstrated understanding and application of evidence informed practice

Immunization Requirements:

  • Provide vaccination records or proof of immunity against measles, mumps, rubella and varicella (chicken pox), Hepatitis B, Tetanus/ Diphtheria/Polio; Meningitis;
  • Provide documentation of the Tuberculosis skin testing (two step);
  • Provide proof of Health Canada-approved COVID-19 vaccination reflective of Ontario Health’s current definition of being fully vaccinated
