Job Description

This is a temporary assignment for twelve (12) months

Are you a Registered Nurse looking for an opportunity that provides a cross-specialty career experience? As a nurse on our Orthopedic Oncology team, you’ll provide care that involves both surgical and oncology nursing.

RN’s on this team deliver individualized cancer care. This is an opportunity to support and deliver care to those facing one of the most formidable challenges they will ever encounter. Our patients receive surgical management of primary bone cancers and soft tissue sarcomas.

This unit also supports orthopaedic trauma patients along with off-service patients from areas such as general internal medicine, general surgery, gynecology, urology and gastroenterology

If you value a nursing experience that is broad in scope while also offering a deep focus in the evolving field of Sarcoma care, this opportunity will be great for you.

Is this you?
You have an insatiable curiosity and an ongoing commitment to acquiring new knowledge and skills.

You are compassionate and empathetic. This specialization will provide you opportunities for emotional growth as you provide care to this unique patient population.

About this unit:
Located at Mount Sinai Hospital, this is a 30-bed unit providing comprehensive care for orthopedic oncology and trauma patients. The orthopaedic oncology population consists of patients diagnosed with a rare type of cancer called sarcoma. This is the largest multi-disciplinary program of its type in Canada. This program is unique because patients are able to receive all of their cancer care needs on one unit - from diagnosis, staging, to treatment, to cure or palliative care when required. Six beds are allocated to the inpatient administration of chemotherapy to our sarcoma population. Patients are cared for by expert oncology nurses and the allied healthcare team throughout the trajectory of their hospitalization.

The orthopedic trauma population consists of patients who have suffered a fracture. These patients undergo the necessary surgical treatment for their fractures and receive professional and individualized care from the interdisciplinary team throughout their recovery.

In this role you will:
Provide direct patient and family centered care for orthopaedic trauma and oncology patients
Care for patients post-operatively following sarcoma resection and reconstruction with complex wounds after major surgery which can involve the use of muscle flaps, skin grafts, and vacuum assisted closure
Perform other duties consistent with the job classification, as required
