Alberta Health Services (AHS) invites applications for the position of Consultant, Infection Prevention and Control under the Calgary Zone Medical Affairs Portfolio.

The Infection Prevention and Control Consultant, Calgary Zone supports IPC work across the Calgary Zone and the Provincial IPC Program.

AHS Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) is an integrated Zone-embedded program striving for Provincial standardization while maintaining a strong site presence and focus. The Physician Contractor Consultant shall provide medical leadership in partnership with other senior leaders and with AHS employees in IPC.

The Physician ContractorConsultant will provide medical services with a focus on reducing Zone and Provincial hospital-acquired infections including but not limited to Clostridiodes difficile, antimicrobial resistant organism infections, acute viral respiratory tract infections, particularly COVID-19 and gastrointestinal infections and will work in conjunction with the Antimicrobial Stewardship team in providing review and adjustment of antimicrobial therapy according to Zone/Provincial guidelines. 

The Physician ContractorConsultant will participate in Continuing Quality Improvement initiatives as they are planned for the applicable service for his/her site and will continually strive to provide the highest quality service consistent with available resources.

The Physician Contractor Consultant will participate in the research and educational mission of Infection Prevention and Control, including preceptorship of residents, fellows and other trainees.

In supporting the Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) portfolio for the designated Site, the Physician Contractor Consultant shall:

  1. Provide consultation and advice on program components for AHS IPC strategic planning.
  2. Provide guidance and/or direction for the development of specific programs and strategies.
  3. Provide consultation and advice on select policies.
  4. Support an engagement process for physicians that promotes their understanding and participation within the IPC framework of AHS.
  5. Provide leadership for physicians supporting IPC service delivery.
  6. Liaise with the Medical Staff and staff internally and externally to AHS in matters pertaining to IPC service delivery.
  7. Participate in select committees, working groups and task forces as required and/or requested, as feasible.
  8. Assist in addressing concerns received from patients, legal representatives, or family members about patient care, in conjunction with IPC senior leadership.
  9. Provide leadership in all aspects of outbreak management related to communicable diseases within the Site and particularly related to COVID-19 and other respiratory viral infections which will become endemic and need to be continually managed. The role of the Physician Contractor Consultant is critical in this regard and within the Provincial IPC Program.
  10. Provide leadership in the management strategies and prevention of C. difficile infection, including fecal microbiota transplantation.
  11. Provide medical leadership to the environmental IPC and investigations required from a laboratory perspective especially for Legionella, Pseudomonas and other environmental pathogens.
  12. Assist in teaching for trainees in the area of environmental and construction-related infection prevention and control.
  13. Provision of essential leadership in novel strategies on microbiome manipulation using probiotics, FMT transplantation, and maintenance of colonization resistance and other innovative tools to reduce antimicrobial resistance organism carriage and C. difficile transmission. 
  14. Assist with provision of expertise on constructions associated requests related to IPC.
  15. Provide medical IPC consultative advice to South Sector as requested.
  16. Provision of expertise in sterilization and disinfection programs related to special requests of unique pieces of equipment.

Qualifications include:

  • Proven leadership, communication, organizational, change management, team building and facilitation skills.
  • Expertise in developing and providing resources, consultation, and collaborative support to stakeholder teams.
  • Ability to design, tailor, implement and evaluate effective strategies to meet identified priorities.
  • Experience in supporting and promoting clinical best practice and experience as a change agent.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills well developed interpersonal skills, ability to cultivate positive relationships and passion for patient safety.
  • Alberta Health Services privileges to practice at AHS facilities.
  • Expertise or experience in infection prevention and control, medical microbiology and infectious diseases, patient safety and quality improvement methodology, and pathology are not necessarily required, but are valued in this role.
