The Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, Department of Psychiatry, at the University of Alberta (http://psychiatry.med.ualberta.ca/), in partnership with Alberta Health Services(AHS), Edmonton Zone, Addiction and Mental Health, are inviting applications for academic / tenured track Academic Medicine and Health Service Program (AMHSP) positions for a community-based child and adolescent psychiatrist with a special interest in primary care in rural and marginalized groups, community outreach, & global psychiatry.  Candidates will also have a strong interest in medical education and/or research.

Unlike traditional academic positions, AMHSP positions are a unique opportunity that allow for development of a viable academic career in conjunction with a clinical career.  Competitively funded protected time for education and/or research is embedded in all AMHSP positions.

 The AMHSP is jointly overseen by Alberta Health Services and the University of Alberta.  The candidate(s) selected for this position will be referred to the AMHSP Arrangement Management Committee to finalize their yearly individual service agreement jointly approved by the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry and Addiction and Mental Health, Alberta Health Services.

The University of Alberta Department of Psychiatry has a well-established residency training program in psychiatry, with Royal College accredited sub-specialty training programs in child & adolescent psychiatry and forensic psychiatry, and a new sub-specialty training program in geriatric psychiatry that has received provisional Royal College approval.  The Department also has a Royal College accredited area of focused competency training program in Addictions Psychiatry. The successful candidate will play a significant role in medical education and/or research leadership. In addition to post-graduate residency training, the Department has commitments to education as a part of the MD Program with the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, providing both pre-clinical and clinical teaching for core and elective experiences for undergraduate MD students.  The successful candidate may also integrate undergraduate medical educational leadership in their position.

 AHS is Canada’s first and largest province-wide, fully integrated health system, responsible for delivering health services to the over four million people living in Alberta, as well as to some residents of Saskatchewan, B.C., and the Northwest Territories. Our multi-disciplinary teams in the Edmonton Zone consisting of nursing, psychiatry, psychology, occupational therapy, social work, education, and speech-language pathology provide education and assistance for more than 1.4 million people in Edmonton and surrounding areas.

 At the provincial level, researchers in the Department are working closely with AHS in the context of the Strategic Clinical Networks (https://www.albertahealthservices.ca/scns/Page7698.aspx) and there is an excellent alignment between the SCNs and the priorities of the provincial health research funding agency (Alberta Innovates Health Solutions).

 The Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry at the University of Alberta is one of Canada’s premiere health sciences institutes, and in recent years has ranked among the top 50 medical schools in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings. Excellent opportunities exist for collaborative research with other disciplines within the Faculty and University and other Faculties, as well as outside the University.

Qualifications:

Candidates must have an MD and must have experience relevant to medical education and/or research. Preference will be given to psychiatrists with previous interest in and/or additional training in medical education and/or research. The positions will allow up to 0.5 FTE for medical education or research, and the remaining FTE will be clinical services with AHS. Remuneration:

Remuneration for this position will be commensurate with qualifications and experience and will be based on the income scale of the six step Academic Medicine and Health Services Program (AMHSP). Further details about this innovative funding plan are available on request.
