The role  
The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Worker and Health Practitioner Program creates an opportunity for participants to reach their full potential via supported on the job training in the Charters Towers Health Service (CTHS) with localised education and meaningful employment. 

The program has been named, in commemoration of, and with current Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Workers and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Practitioners, and with honour will be called ‘The Ume Koola Program'. This language name translates to ‘Our Rock Our Power'. 

CTHS is committed to growing the First Nations health workforce and values the role and contribution of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Worker and Health Practitioner. 

Townsville Hospital and Health Service has partnered with the Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) as the Registered Training Organisation (RTO) to deliver the vocational qualifications associated with the program. Participants are supported with full time employment, tailored education plans to suit individual learning needs, suitable rostering to support engagement with program education and wrap around, culturally safe support to continue through the program's various academic milestones. Program participants will be expected to engage with study outside of rostered hours.

Generous remuneration package value up to $76,897 p.a.comprising:

  • Salary rates between $2261.00 - $2583.30 p.f. (HWF1)
  • Annual leave with 17.5% loading
  • 12.75% employer superannuation contribution
  • Other employment benefits may include: salary sacrificing options ( https://www.health.qld.gov.au/employment/conditions/salary/sacrifice ), locality allowances, employee wellness and assistance programs and access to corporate discounts

Role requirements   
To perform this role, it is essential that the person who holds the position be an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person. It is therefore a genuine occupational requirement under section 25 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991 that applicants are Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islanders. 

  • An Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person is a person who: 
    • identifies as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person; and either
    • is of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent; or
    • is accepted as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person by the Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander community in which he or she lives.
  • To allow the panel to confirm that you are eligible to be considered for this Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander (Identified) role, the panel will seek your response to the following questions. 
    • Who is your mob?
    • Where is your country?
    • How do you contribute to your community?
