We are looking for a Consultant Haematologist with experience and a specialist interest in lymphoma and haematology clinical trials, primarily in lymphoma and myeloma. 

This is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and dedicated Consultant Haematologist to join the specialist lymphoma, haematology clinical trials and myeloma specialist teams within the UHS haematology department. 

The post-holder will join a friendly and committed team of 17 haematologist consultants, 3 academic lymphoma consultants and clinical nurse specialists at the Southampton General Hospital site. UHS is a tertiary referral centre for complex lymphoma cases and has a leading reputation in lymphoma research. The service is always evolving, and the successful candidate should be highly driven to improve patient care and experience.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Responsibilities

WHAT YOU’LL DO:

As a consultant haematologist with an interest in lymphoma you will have responsibility for provision of the medical management of lymphoma patients in an outpatient and inpatient setting. You will be managing myeloma outpatients with a focus on those undergoing clinical trials. You will work closely with members of the lymphoma and wider haematology team. There will be opportunity to develop your skills in lymphoma, autologous transplant, CAR-T therapy, myeloma and phase 1-3 clinical trials.

The post-holder will take part in:

  • Management of patients with lymphoma, lymphoid malignancies, CLL and related disorders in the inpatient, day case and outpatient setting.
  • Inpatient attending on a 1:4 basis covering lymphoma and lymphoid malignancies with support from subspecialty colleagues.
  • Discuss cases as appropriate at the regional lymphoma and myeloma MDTs.
  • Active involvement in the recruitment and management of patients within clinical trials
  • Integration with the world-class clinical, translational and basic research in CLL and Cancer B-cell immunology at the School of Cancer Sciences, Faculty of Medicine, University of Southampton
  • Contributing to the non-resident 1:7 out of hours consultant cover for combined haematology (the post holder will not cover on calls for acute leukaemia, stem cell transplant, or coagulation).
  • Active participation in the education and training of junior doctors, nursing staff and allied health professionals.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

  • Full GMC registration
  • MRCP and FRCPath (or equivalent)
  • CCT (haematology) or within 6 months of obtaining CCT on date of interview

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Qualifications and training

Essential criteria
  • Full GMC registration
  • CCT (haematology) or within 6 months of obtaining CCT on date of interview
  • MRCP and FRCPath (or equivalent)
Desirable criteria
  • Recognised educational supervisor training
  • Higher degree e.g. MD/PhD

Previous or relevant experience

Essential criteria
  • Must be able to demonstrate an appropriate level of clinical experience and competence in clinical and laboratory haematology to practice independently at consultant level
  • Evidence of specific experience and/or training in stem cell transplant and cellular therapies
  • Experience in teaching and training undergraduate medical students and/or postgraduate doctors and other health professionals
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of service improvement project

Aptitudes and skills

Essential criteria
  • Evidence and ability to communicate and liaise effectively with patients and colleagues (verbal and written communication skills in English)
  • Evidence of collaborative working within and between organisations
  • Competence with information technology including remote working
Desirable criteria
  • Publications relating to haematology

Getting to Work
