Detailed job description and main responsibilities

This is a great opportunity for someone looking to build on their leadership skills, or take the step into a leadership role: leading a team of OT, Physio, and therapy support staff, across these clinical areas, and the wider trust, whilst also utilising their highly specialised clinical skills in acute working, and complex discharge planning.

As part of this role you will be leading teams to be innovative, working together to always improve, and put patients first.  This role will require you to work both clinically, and in a leadership role, supporting staff, and developing services. You will be part of our therapy management team, promoting department and trust strategic aims.

This post is part of the wider Therapy services department, and therefore you will have many opportunities to develop new skills and knowledge through our in-service training. You will be part of a large department of over 290 wte Therapy staff including Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists and Therapy support staff.

We run a 7-day therapy service and working on weekends and Bank Holidays, on a roster basis, may be expected as part of your working hours.

 

YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES

As an 8a Therapy manager you will be an integral member of the Therapy management team, helping support the values of the Trust within therapy services, and supporting the streamlining of services for patients. You will be responsible for leading on the development of the staff working across AMU/ED, Medicine and Medicine for Older People wards, as well as within the wider trust, according to your dept roles. This will include close working relationships with divisional management teams, care group managers, and matrons. 

With your professional skills you will provide the clinical expertise to support staff working across the wider Trust by providing advice, education, and support with complex caseloads. This is a  clinical managerial role, with a strong presence on the wards, demonstrating clinical expertise across the Front door/MOP/Medicine patient pathway, and supporting all staff to develop and grow in their roles.


WHAT YOU’LL DO

•    Develop and convey the “vision” for the whole therapy service working alongside all colleagues to facilitate positive patient experience and outcomes. 
•    Be responsible for organising the effective management of therapy staff within your allocated Therapy teams, plus supporting rotating B5/B6 staff, and wider department areas where needed.
•    Manage the budget holder for the Medicine budget and maintain your staffing in line with budget requirements, including supporting cost improvement targets where needed.
•    Support patient flow across the above-named clinical areas, supporting development of new initiatives to promote discharge and flow. 
•    Provide highly specialised clinical advice, both within the Trust and externally, particularly linking with community providers to support streamlining the pathways affecting discharge.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR
 
We are looking for a highly experienced therapist, either OT or Physio, with experience working in a fast-paced acute healthcare setting. You need to be experienced in people management, leading a team, be familiar with HR processes, and be able to demonstrate good leadership skills. 

We are seeking someone who is motivated and enthusiastic, having demonstrable skills in MDT working, teaching and education, plus involvement in research and audit.

We are looking for someone with expertise in the clinical assessment of MOP/Medicine patient cohort, and an interest in frailty is desired.

Core hours will be Monday to Friday, however as we run our Therapy service over 365 days a year you may need to work hours at weekends or Bank Holidays on occasion, to support your team who work a 7-day flexible working pattern.

Experience of working in the acute setting and recent NHS is essential.

Qualifications, knowledge, and experience

Essential criteria
  • BSc / MSc degree in Occupational Therapy or Physiotherapy
  • Leadership, or management training, at master’s level or equivalent experience
  • Significant relevant clinical experience within Occupational Therapy or Physiotherapy
  • Current HCPC registration
  • Project Management qualification / further training, or demonstrates substantial level of project delivery experience
  • Consolidated experience to demonstrate capability and capacity for management of acute health services at a senior level
