Job overview

This is a Full Time Locum Consultant Paediatric Neurologist appointment(1 year maternity leave cover). The post holder will work together with 8 other consultant paediatric neurologists and other team members to deliver paediatric neurology care. It is desirable if the post holder has experience within Neuromuscular, but not essential to this post.

The Paediatric Neurology (PN) service provides tertiary care for children with neurological conditions throughout the South West of England region, and secondary and tertiary care for children with neurological problems in Bristol. It is a large busy service with a wide catchment area, serving a total population of 5.6 million. Although based in Bristol, the service also provides peripheral outreach clinics on a regular basis to all the district general hospitals (DGH) within the region.

The paediatric neurology service is based entirely at Bristol Royal Hospital for Children. (BRHC; part of University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust) It provides a tertiary level service for children who need neurological assessments, care and treatments namely spasticity and movement disorders assessment and management, neuromuscular services, evaluation by the epilepsy surgery service (CESS), neuro-rehabilitation and complex neuroimaging.

Main duties of the job

The appointees will participate in the multidisciplinary clinical meetings, outpatient clinics, participate in on-call service rota, together with emergency work as necessary. The post holder will be expected to provide outreach clinics within the South West region.

We operate a ‘service consultant’ system whereby one neurology consultant is responsible for the day-to-day running of the in-patient service for seven days at a time. In a department of 8 consultants this means delivering 4/5 service weeks per year.

The successful candidate will be expected to comply with all relevant Trust policies relating to administration of patient care. This includes working to set timescales for the triage of referrals, the completion of discharge summaries prior to patients being discharged, following the specified process for the management of patients that do not attend (DNA) their appointment or admission, and the completion of all paperwork deemed necessary to support the management of their patients within agreed timescales. Consultants are also expected to work with service managers and clinical colleagues to manage their caseload in a flexible way, to ensure both clinical, national and local priorities, such as maximum waiting times for referral to treatment, are achieved.
