The successful candidate will apply advanced scientific judgement combined with integrated evidence-based practice to make complex scientific decisions in the analysis of patient specimens leading to the verification and validation of test results and the provision of high level advice to clinical units in accordance with prescribed professional and ethical standards. 

Key competencies (role specific criteria)

You will be assessed on your ability to demonstrate the following:

  • Demonstrated high level of knowledge and skills in the performance of Chemical Pathology investigations in a clinical pathology laboratory.
  • Proven ability to solve complex problems in the workplace.
  • A history of high-level communication skills and demonstrated ability to maintain professional and productive relationships internal and external to the workplace.
  • A history of active process improvement.
  • A developed understanding of laboratory quality systems and the requirements of NATA accreditation and ISO certification.
  • Awareness of the human resource management policies applicable to contemporary workplaces.
  • Demonstrated clinical leadership ability and contribution to the professional development of others.

Qualifications, registrations and other requirements

  • The successful applicant must hold a relevant degree in Medical Laboratory Science (or equivalent) from a recognised tertiary institution.
  • Advanced knowledge and experience in a Chemical Pathology service is essential.
  • While not mandatory, a relevant higher qualification would be well regarded.
  • Appointment to this position requires proof of qualification and/or registration with the appropriate registration authority, including any necessary endorsements, to be provided to the employing service prior to the commencement of service. Overseas applicants are reminded that assessment of equivalence of qualifications is required.
  • Whilst it is anticipated that this position will initially involve mainly day, evening and weekend shifts, the successful applicant may in future be expected to participate in the laboratory's shift and/or continuous shift roster, and may work a combination of day, afternoon, evening and overnight shifts within each fortnight if required.

Vaccine Preventable Diseases (VPD) requirements

  • It will be a condition of employment for this role for the employee to be, and remain, vaccinated against one or more of the following vaccine preventable diseases during their employment: Hepatitis A & B, Measles, Mumps, Pertussis, Rubella and Varicella.
  • Additional vaccinations including Japanese Encephalitis and Rabies may also be required for this position.
  • Existing staff that are engaged prior to 1 July 2016 are not subject to this condition of employment unless they apply for a role with VPD requirements that is with a different Queensland Health entity (i.e. one HHS to another HHS, department to a HHS, or HHS to department).
