The role 

Reporting to the Supervising Chemist, you will perform technical tasks and chemical analyses on a variety of specimens in line with laboratory practices, standard operating procedures and accreditation requirements.  Actively participating in activities of a multi-speciality team, you will also:

  • Exercise high-level decision-making skills to solve more complex chemical problems under limited supervision
  • Receive and manage items and specimens associated with Queensland Police Service, Coroners Court of Queensland and other investigations
  • Attend crime scenes or scenes of chemical incidents and generally take part in field work
  • Assist team members in relation to technical matters by providing support
  • Attend Court if required and furnish evidence regarding technical matters

The successful person

You will demonstrate:

  • A relevant degree in the field of Science with a major emphasis in Chemistry
  • Knowledge and understanding of laboratory techniques as they apply to Analytical Chemistry, including instrumentation, computer techniques and quality assurance
  • Ability to work without direct supervision to produce effective work output and solve complex scientific and technical problems by selecting and applying standard and innovative procedures
  • Effective interpersonal skills, able to work effectively as a member of a team, perform duties in a safe and ethical manner, present expert testimony in a court of law and communicate effectively with staff and clients orally and in writing.
  • Commitment to principles of quality management and continuous quality improvement and contemporary knowledge of NATA/ISO Accreditation/Certification

Located at Coopers Plains, Brisbane, FSQ operates specialised Forensic Biology, Forensic Chemistry and Forensic Operations functions that provides forensic services and expert advice to the Queensland Police Service (QPS) and the Coroner's Court of Queensland.

Forensic Chemistry provides analytical and advisory services principally to the Queensland Police Service in the areas of illicit drug analysis, clandestine drug laboratory investigation, and trace evidence examinations. Our scientists provide expert impartial scientific advice though the provision of formal statements and evidence in court.

Our work at FSQ involves exposure to material related to deaths and criminal offences that may be confronting, due to its graphic and personal nature. Sensitive and professional management of exhibits and information is a critical requirement of this role. The successful candidate will have personal qualities that include well developed resilience, tact and effective strategies for managing themselves and their ability to support colleagues in situations that may be distressing and stressful.

Please note that proposed legislative and structural changes may result in Forensic Science Queensland being moved to another agency within Queensland Public Sector.
