Safety Coordinator

Position Summary

As a project-based position, the Safety Coordinator plays a critical role in ensuring a safe and healthy work environment for all employees. The safety Coordinator is responsible for implementing and providing on-site direction on the company’s Health and Safety programs and policies in compliance with legislative Health and Safety requirements. This position will be instrumental in promoting a culture of safety and proactive risk management.

This position is for projects in the Kootenay Region of BC.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinates and administers an effective health and safety program and provides advice and guidance to the Project Team on Health and safety issues and topics
  • Performs general administrative and recordkeeping functions and procedures including reviewing subcontractor's safety programs; maintaining inventory for all hazardous products, first aid and personal protective equipment used on site; reporting and tracking incidents & near misses, and maintaining and filing confidential information
  • Creates clear and timely “Flash Reports” and participates in detailed, fact-based incident investigations and management
  • Implements client and IDL Health and Safety Programs under the coaching of the H&S Manager
  • Participates in project safety meetings
  • Provides safety material for daily Tool Box meetings and is able to lead Tool Box and Safety meetings
  • Engages in the development and enhancement of Safe Work Practices and Job Hazard Assessments
  • Acquires basic knowledge of site safety programs, emergency response, fire control systems and personal protective equipment and is able to convey these to project team members & contractors
  • Conducts facility inspections and safety audits regularly to monitor safe work practices and procedures
  • Prepares inspection reports and ensures corrective action is taken when deficiencies are identified
  • Collaborates with the Project Manager and Safety Manager to ensure health and safety programs meet legislative compliance
  • Keeps abreast of current and new health and safety laws and regulations,ensuringthe company complies with these laws.
  • Workswith management and staff to develop safety solutions and improvements.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 3 years ofexperience in a safety coordinator role or similar
  • Industrial Construction industry experience is preferred
  • Accreditation as a National Construction Safety Officer (NCSO) or Construction Safety Officer (CSO)
  • Related post-secondary Health & Safetydegrees, diplomas and certifications are an asset
  • Strong understanding of legal health and safety guidelines.
  • Effective communication skills and ability to interact with key stakeholders in verbal, written and electronic form
  • Ability to handle multiple projects and priorities
  • Strong understanding of legal health and safety guidelines
  • Strong computer expertise including experience with MS Word and Excel
