Job overview

The Estates Maintenance Department are looking to recruit an Maintenance Electrician to join our dedicated team at the University Hospital Southampton NHS Trust. We operate accross Southampton General Hospital and Princess Anne Hospital, this is a large static site.

You will will have relevant knowledge and experience in an Electrical Engineering Field such as Electrical Systems up to 415Vac, IET Wiring Regulations, Building Services, Health Care Environment, Knowledge of HTM06-02/06-03.

You will possess the following :

  • The ability to read and interpret drawings and documents
  • Have proven fault finding skills
  • Detailed technical knowledge of regulatory and industry best
  • Practises of electrical systems including Earthing
  • Ability to supervise an apprentices and assistants

The successful candidate will earn around £25,147 + £4,260 (Retention and Recruitment Pay) per year.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Undertake day-to-day reactive, planned preventive maintenance and minor installation work
  • Repair equipment and fault finding
  • You will work on the following Electrical systems:-
  • Single phase (230VAC) and three phase (415VAC)
  • Various electric motor and associated control gear including Inverters
  • POD systems
  • Nurse call and fire alarm systems
  • Building management system (BMS)
  • Air Handling Units 
  • IPS and UPS systems

Additional information 

  • Core working hours 0730-1530 Monday- Friday, however the successful applicant will be expected to participate in an on-call roster currently 1 day in 7.
  • Weekday on-call requires site attendance 1400-2200hrs and 2200-0730hrs from home.
  • Week end on-call requires site attendance 0730-1530hrs (paid as overtime) and on-call from home 1530-0730hrs.
  • Call outs are paid as overtime or taken as lieu time.
  • Basic salary plus Retention and Recruitment allowance.
  • The Estates Maintenance Department has a demonstrable track record in developing staff to enhance personal learning through training

Person specification

Qualifications / training required

Essential criteria
  • Served a recognised apprenticeship in relevant Electrical trade (Ie Electrical Installation, Electrical Maintenance, Controls & Process engineering)
  • Level 3 (or higher) vocational trade certificate in a Electrical engineering discipline Eg. NVQ 3, C&G Level 3 or Equivalent Armed Forces Qualification
  • BS7671:18th Edition Qualification
Desirable criteria
  • Level 3 (Or higher) Technical certificate in relevant engineering discipline or Equivalent Armed Forces Qualification
  • HTM or JSP Specific Competent Persons Certificates
  • C&G 2391 Electrical Testing and inspection qualification.

Previous or relevant experience necessary

Essential criteria
  • Relevant and recent experience in a commercial/industrial maintenance post
  • Sound working knowledge of Electrical Systems such as Low Voltage, Building Management Systems, Process Control Systems & Lighting Systems
Desirable criteria
  • Relevant and Recent experience in healthcare engineering
  • Knowledge of other trade topics (Plumbing, Mechanical, Building etc)
  • Previous supervisory Experience

Getting to Work

Application can be made for parking on site at UHS or through one of the park and ride schemes. This will be based on specific criteria to determine eligibility for site parking as this can be very limited.  UHS encourages staff to utilise other green methods of getting to work such as cycling or walking where possible.
