The successful candidate will develop, implement, maintain and improve supervised services in concert with the Logan laboratory manager, the supervisory team, the group laboratory, Logan and Beaudesert hospital stakeholders and Pathology Queensland stakeholders. 

Key competencies (role specific criteria)

You will be assessed on your ability to demonstrate the following: 

  •  High level of experience as a medical laboratory scientist in the accurate performance of a broad range of Transfusion Medicine testing
  • Advanced clinical knowledge in Transfusion Medicine to support laboratory staff and clients
  • Ability to operate and troubleshoot IH1000 and Banjo instruments or similar analysers
  • Availability to provide urgent remote or on-site support out of hours when required for emergent issues
  • Expertise in the operation and supervision of a Transfusion Medicine service in line with the strategic direction of Pathology Queensland
  • Well-developed multi-modal communication skills and the ability to develop and maintain positive professional relationships with colleagues and clients
  • Ability to supervise and train a team of health practitioners in Transfusion Medicine, complying with the policies of Pathology Queensland and the Department of Health
  • Commitment to continuing education of yourself and supervised colleagues
  • Ability to use or to quickly acquire knowledge of a variety of software systems applicable to supervisory duties including but not limited to a LIS such as Auslab, an electronic medical records system, Quality Information System, Quality control system, procurement, antibody register, BloodNet and BloodSafe, risk management and Microsoft Office products
  • Detailed understanding of laboratory quality systems and the requirements of NATA accreditation and ISO15189 certification for Transfusion Medicine

Qualifications, registrations and other requirements

  • The successful applicant must hold at least a tertiary degree in Medical Laboratory Science (or equivalent) or higher from a recognised university or tertiary institution
  • Qualifications should include Transfusion Medicine components
  • Relevant graduate qualifications in management or science would be an advantage
  • Membership of a professional scientific association such as ANZSBT or ISBT would be an advantage
  • The successful applicant will be required to be the after-hours supervisory contact at times
  • The successful applicant will be required to act as laboratory manager at times

Vaccine Preventable Diseases (VPD) requirements

  • It will be a condition of employment for this role for the employee to be, and remain, vaccinated against one or more of the following vaccine preventable diseases during their employment: Hepatitis A & B, Measles, Mumps, Pertussis, Rubella and Varicella. 
  • Additional vaccinations including Japanese Encephalitis and Rabies may also be required for this position.

·       Existing staff that are engaged prior to 1 July 2016 are not subject to this condition of employment unless they apply for a role with VPD requirements that is with a different Queensland Health entity (i.e. one HHS to another HHS, department to a HHS, or HHS to department).
