Provide scientific advice and provision of results to Cairns Hospital and external clients relating to Haematology, Transfusion, Chemical Pathology and Microbiology in accordance with prescribed professional and ethical standards.

Key competencies (role specific criteria)

You will be assessed on your ability to demonstrate the following:

  • Demonstrated ability to apply multi-specialty scientific judgement in Haematology, Transfusion, Chemical Pathology and Microbiology.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide scientific advice and provision of results to laboratory staff and Hospital and Health Service clients pertaining to Haematology, Transfusion, Chemical Pathology and Microbiology.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide scientific services in accordance with professional clinical standards, established principles / procedures and comprehensive operation and maintenance of analytical equipment.
  • Demonstrated ability to work within a team to contribute to the objectives of the laboratory.
  • Demonstrated ability to contribute to quality and service improvement activities in accordance with National Association of Testing Authority/International Standardisation Organisation (NATA/ISO) accreditation / certification.

Qualifications, registrations and other requirements

  • Bachelor of Applied Science (Medical Laboratory Science) or equivalent qualification.
  • Appointment to this position requires proof of qualification and registration or membership with the appropriate registration authority or association. Certified copies of the required information must be provided to the appropriate supervisor/ manager, prior to the commencement of clinical duties.
  • Queensland Health staff are required to participate in 24-hour shift, on-call or weekend roster arrangements.
  • Applicants will be required to work over night, afternoon, weekend and Public Holiday shifts.
  • All newly appointed staff are contracted to work any rostered shift within the 24-hour 7-day roster period, including overtime as required. This facilitates the progressive review of staffing and shift arrangements across the organisation to accommodate changes in workload and service requirements.
  • At times this position may also be required to provide relief to the Innisfail, Atherton and Thursday Island Laboratories, as operationally required.

Vaccine Preventable Diseases (VPD) requirements

  • It will be a condition of employment for this role for the employee to be, and remain, vaccinated against one or more of the following vaccine preventable diseases during their employment: Hepatitis A & B, Measles, Mumps, Pertussis, Rubella and Varicella.
  • Additional vaccinations including Japanese Encephalitis and Rabies may also be required for this position.
  • Existing staff that are engaged prior to 1 July 2016 are not subject to this condition of employment unless they apply for a role with VPD requirements that is with a different Queensland Health entity (i.e. one HHS to another HHS, department to a HHS, or HHS to department).
