The successful candidate will provide specialist advice on scientific, clinical, professional and safety matters to the Analytical Chemistry Unit Supervising Scientist, Principal Chief Scientist, the Unit Director and Departmental Director and has a major role in developing, negotiating and coordinating management, planning and policy initiatives within Chemical Pathology. 

Key competencies (role specific criteria)

You will be assessed on your ability to demonstrate the following key capabilities, knowledge and experience. Within the context of the responsibilities described above under ‘Your role', the ideal applicant will be someone who can demonstrate the following:

Clinical Expertise

  • Extensive knowledge, experience and proven record in Clinical Mass Spectrometry for the following areas. Method development, validation, troubleshooting, staff training and mentoring.
  • Knowledge, skills and expertise in the validation and clinical interpretation of results in Chemical Pathology including therapeutic drug monitoring, steroid hormones, trace elements and Newborn Screening for Metabolic and Genetic Disease.
  • Knowledge of pathology testing across the Analytical Chemistry Unit and its diagnostic, therapeutic and monitoring role in disease and health.

Operational Management

  • Proven ability to work independently and demonstrate initiative in problem solving and innovative solutions.
  • Proven ability to lead a team of professional staff in the delivery of a high-quality testing service.
  • Proven ability to lead a team of professional staff in the implementation of large projects

Communication

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively plan, implement and manage policies and strategies relevant to provision of state-wide Analytical Chemistry Unit services.
  • Demonstrated advanced negotiation, consultative, communication and interpersonal skills with both internal and external clients in the provision of a client-focussed service.
  • Demonstrated high level oral and written communication skills, including demonstrated ability to prepare briefings and reports of a substantial and complex nature.

Leadership

  • Demonstrated personal qualities of leadership and a high level of knowledge, expertise and skill in the strategic management of human, financial and physical resources of the Unit and state-wide services in line with the strategic direction of the Department of Chemical Pathology and Pathology Queensland

Qualifications, registrations and other requirements

  • The successful applicant must hold a Bachelor of Science degree, or an equivalent

  • It will be a condition of employment for this role for the employee to be, and remain, vaccinated against one or more of the following vaccine preventable diseases during their employment (Health Employment Directive No. 01/16(PDF) ( https://www.health.qld.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0009/150120/hed-0116.pdf )): measles, mumps, rubella (MMR),varicella (chicken pox),pertussis (whooping cough),hepatitis B, tuberculosis.
