The successful candidate will work independently; provide high level of communication, discretion in the absence of decision makers in resolution of conflict with the ability to interact effectively with all staff, and patients within established guidelines. 

Key competencies (role specific criteria)

You will be assessed on your ability to demonstrate the following:

  • Proven ability to solve problems and show initiative in the workplace.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively use computerised systems.
  • Experience in pre-analytical processes and excellent troubleshooting abilities in a large and complex specimen reception unit.
  • Demonstrated ability to arrange in-service training and continuing educational programs for Specimen Reception staff and delivery of training programs for changes in Standard Operating Procedures or equipment.
  • Proven ability to manage time effectively in a highly process driven environment with competing priorities.
  • Ability to plan and prioritise to effectively manage the customer service function in alignment with the overall strategic plan of the Department.

Qualifications, registrations and other requirements

  • Nil mandatory qualifications are required for this role although a Certificate IV in Workplace Training and Assessment or Certificate III Pathology or ability to gain this qualification is desirable.
  • Central Specimen Reception delivers a 24-hour, 7-day service. In this workplace, all newly appointed staff can be contracted to work any rostered shift within the 24-hour 7-day roster period, including overtime as required. This facilitates the progressive review of staffing and shift arrangements in the laboratory to accommodate changes in workload and service requirements.
  • Candidate will be required to underake frequent manual handling, bending and lifting.

Vaccine Preventable Diseases (VPD) requirements

  • It will be a condition of employment for this role for the employee to be, and remain, vaccinated against one or more of the following vaccine preventable diseases during their employment: Hepatitis A & B, Measles, Mumps, Pertussis, Rubella and Varicella.
  • Additional vaccinations including Japanese Encephalitis and Rabies may also be required for this position.
  • Existing staff that are engaged prior to 1 July 2016 are not subject to this condition of employment unless they apply for a role with VPD requirements that is with a different Queensland Health entity (i.e. one HHS to another HHS, department to a HHS, or HHS to department).
