Job Summary:

Correctional Health Services, Alberta Health Services (AHS) is inviting applications for a General Practitioner to work at the Red Deer Remand Centre (RDRC).

 

RDRC houses up to 150 male and female remanded and provincially sentenced persons. A multidisciplinary team of nurses, social workers, pharmacists, nurse practitioners, dentists, psychologists, addiction counselors, mental health therapists, and psychiatrists work alongside physicians at each facility to provide essential health services including emergency care, diagnosis and treatment of acute or chronic illness, medication administration, mental health services, urgent or emergent ophthalmologic services, urgent or emergent dental care, and health promotion and disease prevention.

  
While maintaining an independent practice, the successful applicant will engage in clinical service in this facility that includes outpatient clinics and on-call service. Specifically, this opportunity is to provide up to 2 half-day clinics per week (4 hour clinics). Additional opportunities exist to provide virtual services to the other 7 Provincial Correctional Facilities.

 

Responsibilities / Accountabilities:

  1. Provide medical assessment, diagnosis, and treatment to inmates in the Centres in compliance with the standards, guidelines, and requirements of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta, the Canadian Medical Association, AHS Medical Staff Bylaws and AHS Medical Staff Rules;
  2. Deliver services as scheduled at a mutually agreeable time with the Centre(s);
    • If mutually agreed upon, the Practitioner may deliver in person or virtual services to other Correctional Health Centres in the Province.
  3.  Remain fully informed on developments concerning the medical condition of acutely ill inmates in cooperation with all other health providers in the Centre(s);
  4. Respond by phone to calls about medical emergencies at the Centre if the contractor is available and able to respond at the time of a medical emergency;
  5. Authorize medications prescribed to inmates in the Centre(s);
  6. Authorize and maintain inventories of controlled drugs in the Centre(s);
  7. Identify opportunities for improvement in policies and practices and for tabling specific proposals that will result in increased efficiency in the provision of health care to incarcerated persons;
  8. Provide guidance and direction regarding health care matters to the Centres’ Health Care Managers;
  9. Provide professional advice to the Centres’ correctional officials regarding health care policy;
  10. Participate in committee work relating to health care service matters as reasonably required and supported by the Zone;
  11. Promote good health practices for patients; and
  12. Provide information to fatality inquiries as required.

 

Qualifications and Required Attributes:

The successful applicant must hold an MD or its equivalency and shall have or be eligible for certification in Family Medicine with the Canadian College of Family Physicians and be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta. Certification in methadone maintenance is preferred. Physicians with previous corrections/forensic experience preferred.

The practitioner will obtain and maintain an AHS Medical Staff Appointment.

 

Reporting Relationship:

The practitioner will report to the Facilities Medical Director, Correctional Health.

 

Term:

Start April 1, 2024.
