This is an exciting opportunity to join the Rheumatology team at University  Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust (UHSFT). You will be required to have appropriate experience in rheumatology and hold or be within 6 months of obtaining certification from the General Medical Council.

The Rheumatology Department at UHSFT is a progressive, award winning department with strong links to research through links with the University of Southampton and MRC Lifecourse Epidemiology Centre. We are a EULAR Centre of Excellence, Lupus UK Centre of Excellence and Paget’s Association Centre of Excellence. We operate from Southampton General Hospital, but also provide several community clinics across the wider Southampton area on a weekly basis.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Responsibilities

WHAT YOU’LL DO:

The post is a full-time 10 PA post, but applications from those wishing to work part-time will be considered.

Provide specialist out-patient and in patient opinion and case management Contribute to the ongoing development of rheumatology services for the local population in Southampton Participate in training and educational activities, administrative, teaching, continuing medical education and audit activities whilst maintaining clinical excellence within the service.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

This is a great opportunity to be part of the Rheumatology Department who are seeking a replacement Consultant Rheumatologist to join a team of 14 consultants, 2 Specialist Registrars, 1 Clinical Fellow, 2 CMTs, in addition to specialist nursing, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, pharmacy, psychology and administrative staff, supported by input from all associated specialties. This is a replacement post, and we are looking to appoint an enthusiastic and forward-looking rheumatologist. There is no GIM commitment for this post, however if the successful candidate was particularly interested in a combined GIM role, it is possible that this could be developed whilst in-post. The job is available as soon as a successful candidate is appointed.

Qualifications and training

Essential criteria
  • MBBS, MBChB or equivalent
  • Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) or within 6 months of CCT
Desirable criteria
  • Post graduate qualifications

Previous or relevant experience

Essential criteria
  • Training and wide experience in rheumatology, sufficient to practise as an independent consultant
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in managing patients with inflammatory arthritis, vasculitis and connective tissue diseases. Experience in musculoskeletal ultrasound

Aptitudes and skills

Essential criteria
  • Evidence and ability to communicate and liaise effectively with patients and colleagues (verbal and written communication skills in English)
  • Ability to take responsibility and provide leadership where appropriate
  • Ability to work in a team environment and to develop effective working relationships on an individual and multidisciplinary basis with all levels of staff
Desirable criteria
  • Formal management and leadership training
  • Experience of service development

Getting to Work

Application can be made for parking on site at UHS or through one of the park and ride schemes. This will be based on specific criteria to determine eligibility for site parking as this can be very limited.  UHS encourages staff to utilise other green methods of getting to work such as cycling or walking where possible.
