    The Medical Practitioner Employment Register is established to provide the Department of Health with a pool of experienced and skilled people who are able to work at short notice. Interested persons are able to submit their application to be considered for duties on a fixed term or casual basis.

    This Register will remain open to applicants until 30 June 2025 and will be reviewed on a regular basis.

    Applications from recruitment agencies, including locum agencies, will not be accepted.

    Please note that the Register will not preclude other Medical Practitioner positions being advertised if warranted. Current vacancies are available on the website.

    Career Medical Officer
    Medical Practitioner Level 10-13
    $130,332- $160,257 per annum

    Registrar/Senior Registrar
    Medical Practitioner Level 5-11
    $97,946 - $138,593 per annum

    Please note that to be appointed as a Senior Registrar the following additional criteria must be met:

    • Four years of post-graduate experience.
    • Enrolled in a recognised specialty training program, successfully completed all fellowship examinations relevant to their training program and employment and be within one year of obtaining specialist fellowship.

    Resident Medical Officer/Senior Resident Medical Officer
    Medical Practitioner Level 2-8
    $79,578 - $116,260 per annum

    • Please note that to be appointed to Senior Resident Medical Officer the applicant needs to have General or unconditional registration with the Medical Board of Australia and a minimum of 4 years’ relevant post graduate experience


    Rural Medical Practitioner
    Rural Medical Practitioner Level 1
    $185.16 per hour


    Specialist/Senior Specialist
    Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 1 – 11
    $163,005 - $228,206 per annum
    Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 1-3
    $234,726 - $247,768 per annum

    • Please note to be appointed to Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 1-3 the applicant must satisfy the criteria as described in Clause 20 of the Medical Practitioners (Tasmanian State Service) Award .

    Visiting Medical Practitioner
    Level 1-2
    $128.61- $144.55 per hour
    $149.21- $168.45 (Rolled up Rate) per hour


    Visiting Medical Specialist
    Level 1-4
    $161.67 - $194.30 per hour
    $187.50 - $225.38 (Rolled up Rate) per hour

    • Please note that for progression to Visiting Medical Specialist Level 4 the applicant must satisfy the criteria as described in Schedule 3 of the Tasmanian Visiting Medical Practitioners Agreement 2019.
