Your key responsibilities

You will be required to fulfil the responsibilities of this role in accordance with the Queensland Public Service values.

  • Adhere to defined service quality standards, health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being undertaken to ensure high quality, safe services and workplaces.
  • Perform phlebotomy collections on predominantly on the wards and in the Outpatient department as required.
  • Perform general laboratory duties including the receipt of specimens, Esky packing, Data Entry (registration of pathology requests) into the laboratory information system. This role is primarily phlebotomy duties, however training will be provided to expand skills and knowledge in the CSR department.
  • Under supervision load specimens onto laboratory analysers.
  • Maintain competencies in all aspects of Phlebotomy and CSR and maintain a low error rate.
  • Maintain a safe working environment by ensuring the cleaning of work benches, trolleys, and equipment, meet Queensland Health WHS and Infection Control procedures and policies.
  • Participate in quality and service improvement activities to continually improve patient care.
  • Comply with procedural standards for operational staff in compliance with NATA 15089 and ISO 9001:2000.
  • Participate in continuing education programs for Phlebotomy and Central Specimen Reception staff.
  • Effectively prioritise workloads to assist the laboratory to effectively meet Pathology Queensland's turn-around-time (TAT) targets.
  • Participate in the evening, weekend and public holiday roster for hours between 6am-10pm.
  • Perform pre-analytical processes consistently and accurately, by maintaining competency in all areas of Central Specimen Reception.
  • Utilise software applications applicable to the position.
  • Liaise with patients as well as medical and non-medical staff in a professional manner to ensure the correct processing of specimens and efficient operation of the specimen reception department.
  • To work independently and professionally and demonstrate sound problem- solving skills.
  • Participate in quality and service improvement activities to continually improve patient care.

Key competencies (role specific criteria)

You will be assessed on your ability to demonstrate the following:

  • Knowledge or ability to rapidly acquire knowledge of medical terminology and abbreviations, pathology test names and specimen types. Knowledge and competency in phlebotomy practices.
  • Availability to work all shifts on the existing and future roster patterns, ability to undertake additional shifts to backfill holiday and sick leave.
  • A working knowledge of, or demonstrated ability to quickly learn, all aspects of pre analytical specimen processing (CSR). Data entry skills and the use of MS Word and Excel a distinct advantage.
  • Ability to work in a responsible and efficient manner with and without supervision, ability to prioritise workload to meet deadlines, ability to effectively use, or quickly acquire ability to use, the Laboratory Information System.
  • An established history of positive teamwork and respectful behaviour. High level of interpersonal and communication skills to enable effective, cooperative interaction within a work group and between clients.
