Seasonal Nutrition Assistant

Duration: April 1, 2024 to September 2, 2024

Basic Function :  This position will assist with diet preparation and delivery, as well as browse harvesting. This position will also assist and provide support in implementing the approved Strategic Plan.

Responsibilities:
  • Safely prepare species specific diets, in-house mixes, vitamins and supplements
  • Delivery of animal diets across zoo site to various animal holding areas
  • Maintain food safety throughout diet production
  • Clean and sanitize food baskets and food contact surface within Food Production Unit
  • Receive, organize and store various types of feeds (shelf stable, frozen and fresh)
  • Use and operation of specialized food machinery
  • Weighs, counts and packs individual diet rations, training and enrichment items
  • Assists with deep cleaning of coolers, freezers and food storage areas
  • Assist with browse harvesting, weighing, collection, and distribution across zoo site
  • Provide basic care of Toronto Zoo Browse Farm plants including watering, weeding, and mulching as required
  • Assist with conducting tours, virtual programs and outreach activities
  • Other duties may be assigned by Supervisor
Qualifications:
  • Completion of an Animal/Wildlife Nutrition course (preferably enrolled in/or graduate of a Nutrition or Animal related program of study).
  • Above average communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills
  • Experience working in a centralized kitchen preparing diets/meals
  • Working knowledge of food safety and hygienic practices
  • Exemplary customer service skills
  • Experience working in inclement weather conditions
  • Must be able to meet physical demands of the job (lifting/carrying items up to 25 kg, standing and sitting for prolonged periods, kneeling, twisting and bending).
  • Proficiency with computers (Microsoft Suite)
  • Full G class driver’s license
