Metro Mining Limited (ASX: MMI) is an Australian mining company based in Brisbane. Metro’s flagship project, the Bauxite Hills Operation, located 95km north of Weipa, is one of the largest independent projects within the internationally acclaimed Weipa Bauxite Region.

About the role

We are currently seeking a dedicated and experienced Health and Safety Officer to join our team. Working closely with the H&S Superintendent, the successful candidate will play a crucial role in maintaining a safe and efficient workplace environment. 

The Health and Safety Officer will be responsible for responding to medical concerns, identifying safety issues, delivering training, and assisting in incident management and reporting.

This role is a 15:13 FIFO roster arrangement and applicants must reside in Bamaga, Mapoon, Weipa, or Cairns . Applicants located in other areas/states must be willing to self-relocate, and state this on their resume. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the team to develop and maintain a Safety Management system that complies with legislation.
  • Respond effectively to on-site incidents, injuries, and emergencies, providing medical care and basic life support when necessary.
  • Provide injury management support and facilitate incident reporting and action tracking.
  • Consolidate an Emergency Response Team (ERT) capability onsite and mentor ERT volunteers.
  • Ensure accurate reports on safety performance are gathered and available to all business units.
  • Facilitate internal and external Safety Audits and conduct internal audits and inspections on emergency response equipment.
  • Support injury prevention and company-wide health and safety initiatives.
  • Assist in identifying safety priorities through Risk Registers and other sources.
  • Maintain safety database and records systems.
  • Manage, review, and approve high-risk work activities such as working at height, confined space, and crane operations.
  • Ensure statutory obligations and accountabilities are met.
  • Perform other tasks as directed.

Qualification Requirements

To be considered for this role, you will have:

  • Certificate IV in Work Health & Safety
  • Diploma in Paramedical Science
  • First Aid Certificate
  • Drug & Alcohol Testing Certificate
  • Certificate III in Mine Emergency Response and Rescue

Skills & Experience

  • Minimum 3 years of safety experience in the mining industry.
  • Incident Investigation Lead Auditor to recognised standard (e.g., Tap Root, ICAM desirable)
  • Light vehicle & 4WD training (desirable)
  • Experience in risk management applications and solutions.
  • Knowledge of behaviour-based safety science.
  • Ability to write technical documents including procedures, instructions, and safety management tools.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong leadership abilities with the capacity to organise and assign work effectively.
  • Demonstrated ability to produce results in a timely manner.
  • Proficient in conducting drug & alcohol testing.
