JOB SUMMARY
Performs evaluation/management and procedural coding for clinic, inpatient, and outpatient encounters. Assigns and sequences all codes for services rendered. Collaborates with coders, billers, clinical staff, managers, and healthcare professionals to ensure accurate coding assignment and to resolve any coding-related claim denials.
JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Job Specific :

Coding Duties

  • Assigns codes to diagnoses, procedures, and office visits, using correct CPT, HCPCS Level II, and ICD-10-CM codes.
  • Ensures that assigned codes are accurate and sequenced correctly in accordance with coding guidelines, as well as insurance and government regulations.
  • Examines patient medical record to ensure coding accurately reflects patient’s medical care.
  • Demonstrates continued improvement on coding reviews and audits.
  • Submits and documents provider queries in a compliant and timely manner.
  • Create new patient accounts, enter demographic and insurance details, and verify insurance eligibility as necessary to post charges.
  • Posts surgical and clinic-generated charges.

Teamwork & Communication

  • Communicate with outside providers or hospital affiliations to obtain information needed to code services per coding and carrier guidelines.
  • Communicate with physicians and managers of any problems arising from incorrect, incomplete coding or documentation.
  • Maintain a close working relationship with physicians, advanced practice providers, and the billing department, in regards to coding and billing.
  • Plan and participate in coding and billing meetings with managers, administrators, advanced practices providers, and physicians.

Education

  • Once obtained, maintain professional certifications as required by the certifying organization.
  • Maintain up-to-date coding manuals (CPT, HCPCS Level II, and ICD-10-CM).
  • Remain current with most recent revisions of coding standards and federal regulations to comply with all legal requirements regarding coding procedures and practices.
  • Actively participate in all required in-service education.

Hospital:

  • Adheres to organization-wide and other applicable policies and procedures.
  • Day-to-day performance complies with the hospital’s Service Excellence Behavioral Expectations.
  • Performs within the prescribed limits of the hospital’s Ethics, Compliance and Confidentiality Program guidelines.
  • Performs within his/her professional Scope of Practice at all times.

Other Duties As Assigned:

  • Actively enrolled in, with at least 50% completion, of an approved medical coding program.
  • Knowledge of anatomy and terminology.

Preferred:

  • Successful completion of an approved medical coding program.
  • Associates degree in a healthcare related field.
  • Knowledge of pathophysiology and basic pharmacology.

EXPERIENCE
Required:

  • None

Preferred:

  • One year of medical coding or billing experience in a physician setting.

Special Skills and Abilities:
Required:

  • Able to work in a collaborative, team environment with coders, billers, clinical staff, managers, and providers
  • Good mathematical skills
  • Good typing and 10-key speed and accuracy
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Basic proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)

Preferred:

  • Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).

LICENSURE / CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

Required:

  • Actively enrolled in a medical coding program and must obtain CPC-A or CCA within one year of hire.

Preferred:

  • Certified Professional Coder (CPC-A or CCA)
