We are currently hiring for a Health and Safety Specialist in Whitby. If you’re highly motivated and are ready for an exciting career that will shape the future of the foodservice industry, we want to hear from you.
Position Summary:
  • The Health & Safety Specialist has a demonstrated commitment and focus on creating a Safety First culture. To be successful, you will have a solid background in health & safety, and enjoy working in a fast paced environment with multiple priorities. You must have excellent interpersonal skills and proven ability to work within a team environment as well as independently. You are comfortable problem solving while delivering Service Excellence to our internal and external partners.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Assist in developing health & safety improvement initiatives within all Flanagan branches.
  • Monitor health & safety systems and advise management on system performance; publish statistics regarding performance against set goals.
  • Perform gap analysis between applicable standards.
  • Perform internal health & safety audits that are compliant with corporate policies, practices, and procedures.
  • Conduct risk analysis, verification, validation activities, and formal design.
  • Act as liaison with health & safety auditors and assume responsibility for ensuring corrective actions.
  • Review and submit WSIB claim documentation, and support the day-to-day management of Return to Work (RTW) program for the designated location.
  • Ensure ongoing compliance with industrial sector OHSA standards and local legislation.
  • Maintain health & safety control documentation.
  • Identify relevant health & safety training needs and opportunities.
  • Develop and deliver health & safety related training content.
  • Keep track of health & safety training requirements for all personnel during the onboarding process and annual requirements.
  • Co-Chair the JHSC Committee; managing agenda’s, minutes and take the lead for corrective action items in conjunction with the appropriate department leader for all Flanagan divisions.
  • Managing/delegate monthly JHSC/Safety inspections.
  • Ensure maintain of first aid stations and first aid certifications.
  • Conduct Accident Investigations.
  • Provide support to Early and Return to Work program.
  • Other assigned duties.
Qualifications:
  • Minimum 1-3 years of direct work experience within a health & safety department.
  • Experience with health & safety systems, OHSA regulations, guidelines, and associated standards.
  • Practical experience with risk management.
  • High level of proficiency with Microsoft Office Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Must possess excellent communication skills for liaising and communicating with vendors, and internal departments.
  • Effective presentation skills; experience developing training content and delivering material to groups ranging from 1-200 employees.
  • Training and knowledge of root cause and corrective actions.
  • Highly motivated and self-directed.
  • Capable of multi-tasking, and able to work with minimal supervision.
  • Extremely detail-oriented and analytical thinker.
  • A well-defined sense of diplomacy, including solid negotiation, conflict resolution skills.
  • Strong work ethic and positive team attitude.
  • Class G Driver’s license, and use of a personal vehicle for work related travel.
  • Certified, or willingness to obtain JHSC and First Aid certification.
  • Ability to work under pressure, and deal with stressful situations.
  • Ability to develop, review, and maintain metrics and audits.
  • Ability to build and maintain working relationships with other departments, key business partners, and government agencies.
