The Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo is seeking a full-time permanent Environmental Health & Safety Specialist (EHS) to lead and develop programs and staff engagement to ensure all EHS requirements of the organization are met. The role will involve interacting with teams and guiding leaders in maturing the health safety and environment culture and ensuring regulatory compliance. The EHS Specialist will champion policy and program development, training, inspection, monitoring, and risk assessment initiatives to nurture an EHS environment of continuous improvement.

What you will do:
  • Develop EHS management systems, including safety and environmental plans, teaching, auditing, and periodic reviews.
  • Conduct EHS risk assessments to ensure safety and environmental compliance as it relates to the public, zoo staff, zoo animals and infrastructure, in collaboration with all branches.
  • Acts as point of contact for all health, safety and environmental concerns.
  • Ensures full compliance with Alberta OHS and Safety regulations and Alberta Environment regulations.
  • In collaboration with the Senior Manager Facilities Services, administers and documents the Joint Health & Safety committee meetings (JHSC).
  • Coordinates safety drills, including scheduling, organizing and communicating in conjunction with relevant departments.
  • Leads the Zoo’s Green Team.
  • Coordinates and executes regular safety audits with department managers.
  • Completes regular inspections in all areas of the Zoo property and ensures that the facility is safe & environmentally compliant to the highest standards.
  • Ensures that safety, health or environmental issues are addressed with the department manager in a timely manner.
  • Arranges and schedules regular safety training for staff and volunteers including on-boarding safety briefings.
  • Assists in the identification, development and provision of appropriate EHS related information, instruction and training.
  • Completes internal audits as required.
  • Ensures appropriate and sufficient safety equipment is available to all employees (Spill kits, First aid kits, Fire extinguishers).
  • Maintains a WHMIS Program, including a current MSDS system and staff training.
  • Monitors and advises on legislative and technical changes relating to health and safety.
  • Coordinates the review of EHS related policies and procedures.
  • Is familiar with Workers’ Compensation Board regulations and policies and provide support.
  • Assists in the development, coordination and maintenance of emergency preparedness plans.
  • Coordinates all the requirements for maintaining COR Certification.
  • Maintains documentation of the company's safety procedures, accidents, and related events.
  • Conducts incident investigations.
What you will bring:

Post Secondary education in Health & Safety or Environmental Management or related field is preferred.
Minimum of 10 years of experience in Operations Safety Manager roles
CRST or CRSP Designation is an asset
Class 5 Driver’s License
Excellent verbal and written communication skills along with active listening skills.
Ability to work independently and in a team environment and highly proficient computer skills.
Must have knowledge of workplace safety systems.
Standard First Aid with AED
Must have computer skills, including MS Office.

Working Conditions:

Shift work, consisting of 8-hour shifts including weekends and statutory holidays.
Prolonged periods of exposure to the elements.
Extended periods of walking with some heavy lifting.
Extended periods sitting completing data entry. The Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo is an outdoor facility and all staff working at the zoo must be comfortable working in a large variety of outdoor conditions. The Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo follows the advice of Environment Canada when responding to temperature and air quality issues.
