Applications are invited for a full-time Senior Endoscopy Education Fellow at University Hospital of Southampton (UHS) Endoscopy Unit and Training Academy. This is an exciting opportunity to spend 1 year consolidating diagnostic endoscopy skills whilst developing teaching skills and conscious competence by partaking in academy activities such as immersion weeks, therapeutic skills courses, and ENTS simulation. 

In addition, training in an area of advanced endoscopy to match candidates’ requirements can be offered. UHS is a large tertiary referral centre for cancer and complex endoscopy and us such training is available from experts in complex endoscopic resection (EMR/ESD), ablation techniques (RFA/cryotherapy), stricture management, or other areas (e.g. capsule/double balloon endoscopy). The candidate will be encouraged to develop leadership and management skills by learning how to deliver educational content in a variety of settings.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES

WHAT YOU’LL DO

  • Consolidate diagnostic endoscopic skills with delivery of service GI endoscopy sessions, whilst training to a high level in an advanced endoscopic field to match the candidate’s requirements. For example, this could be complex endoscopic resection (EMR/ESD), ablation techniques, or could extend into other fields of endoscopy (e.g. capsule/ double balloon endoscopy)/ gastroenterology by agreement
  • Develop teaching skills and conscious competence by taking part in Southampton endoscopy training academy activities including (but not limited to) delivery of immersive endoscopic training, active participation in basic and therapeutic skills courses including train the trainers, ENTS simulation course, GI haemostasis, and polypectomy. Support and up-skilling will be provided to meet the candidate’s needs
  • Develop leadership and management skills by learning how to deliver educational content in a variety of settings
  • Participate in quality improvement and research activities.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

Applicants must have full registration with the General Medical Council. Those trained in the UK should have evidence of higher specialty training and have full JAG accreditation in both gastroscopy and colonoscopy. Non-UK applicants must demonstrate equivalent training

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Appointment will be made under local contractual terms and conditions of service for Trust appointed (non-training fellow doctors and dentists).

Successful candidates will have an educational framework equivalent to training grade doctors, and there will be a named educational supervisor assigned at the start of the post. The opportunity for Continued Professional Development (CPD) is highly supported and encouraged by the Trust, with options available to take study leave. All licensed doctors must meet the GMC requirements for revalidation and there will be an annual appraisal to support this process.

Grades for Trust appointed (non-training) fellows will be paid a basic salary at a nodal pay point linked to the grade, at the rate set out in the National Medical and Dental pay circular. Basic salary detailed below plus any additional remuneration (as applicable) for hours set out in the doctors work schedule (e.g. additional hours, weekend allowance, and any hours which attract enhanced pay)

Basic Salary -  MT04        Basic Salary – MT05            £63,152

Salary will be assessed based on experience and skills. Eligibility criteria for appointment to a Nodal Point 5;

  • Have a minimum of 6 years of Specialty training
  • Hold relevant higher specialty exam (e.g FRCP, FRCA, FRCS)
  • A portfolio of evidence that demonstrates they meet the criteria for progression (in line with the Curriculum for the speciality similar to deanery trainee)

Travelling expenses will not be paid for attending interview

Please note that GMC registration (with a licence to practice) and right to work in the UK are essential for this role.  Successful applicants will already have GMC registration or will be able to demonstrate they are eligible.  Applicants requiring Tier 2 sponsorship should ensure they meet the Home Office application criteria prior to submitting an application.

Qualifications and training

Essential criteria
  • MRCP or equivalent
  • Full JAG accreditation in Gastroscopy and Colonoscopy (or equivalent standard)
  • Full GMC registration
  • MB BS or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • Certificate of attendance at JAG Train the Trainers course

Previous or relevant experience

Essential criteria
  • Demonstration of Endoscopic key performance indicators within JAG standards
  • Evidence of training skills
Desirable criteria
  • Exposure to advanced endoscopic techniques
  • Experience of leading audit projects
  • Research experience/project
  • Presentation of work at a national or international meeting

Aptitudes and skills

Essential criteria
  • Evidence and ability to communicate and liaise effectively with patients and colleagues (verbal and written communication skills in English)
  • Understanding benefit/risk balance
  • Capacity to operate under pressure. Demonstrates initiative and resilience to cope with setbacks & adapt to rapidly changing circumstances

Getting to Work

Application can be made for parking on site at UHS or through one of the park and ride schemes.
