Trainee Advanced Clinical Practitioner - Macmillan Acute Oncology

Job overview

We’re looking to recruit an enthusiastic and highly motivated Healthcare Worker to work within Cancer Care as a Band 7 Trainee Advanced Clinical Practitioner in the Macmillan Acute Oncology Service (MAOS).   You will commence on an NHSE funded , Masters level, University-accredited education pathway providing you with the knowledge and skills to provide advanced care to the patients who access the service.   All our ACPs will work within the Aspirant Cancer Career and Education (ACCEND) competency framework and the UK Oncology Nursing Service (UKONS) Acute Oncology Passport. 

The ACPs within the MAOS provide prompt review and comprehensive assessment of all patients presenting to UHS for scheduled, unscheduled and emergency cancer care 24hrs a day, 7 days a week. The team are also the primary providers of the Cancer Care Emergency Line which is fundamental to the delivery of the service. The team work hand-in-hand with the medical teams across the care group to provide a dynamic, practitioner-led approach to care delivery.

The Cancer Care Advanced Clinical Practitioner training scheme commenced in 2014 and has been recognised for its innovative approach to care, winning a Health Education England Wessex Shine Award. The Macmillan Acute Oncology Service also won the Macmillan Service Improvement Excellence Award in recognition of its positive impact on the quality of patient care.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Advanced Clinical Practice is set around the ‘4 Pillars’ Framework that includes Clinical, Leadership & Management, Research & Development and Education. You will commence an education pathway where you will be supported to complete the core modules for Advanced Clinical Practice.  These include History Taking and Physical Assessment (HTPA), Research Methods and Evidence Based Practice, Diagnostics and Decision Making (DADM), Prescribing and Pharmacology, Transition to Advanced Practice (TAP) and an option module before undertaking a dissertation.  These modules provide the underpinning theory and knowledge that encompass the 4 Pillars.  At present, there are two approaches for this Masters Pathway: a module–by-module system via Southampton University or the new Apprenticeship pathway , such as the Bournemouth University Apprenticeship , that will include all the modules and the dissertation in a 3 year programme. 

You will learn the fundamental skills of assessing and clerking all patients that come through the MAOS , where you will provide a full clinical review of the patients in line with the HTPA module standards and formulate appropriate management plans , with support and supervision provided by  our established ACPs and members of our medical team. 

You will also learn to handle calls to the Cancer Care 24/7 Emergency Triage Line and will be the principle person responsible for the delivery of this service, ensuring that quality standards are met and that patient safety is optimised.

As part of the provision of a 24hr service, you will be required to work a mix of days, weekends (including bank holidays), and night duties

We are looking for a motivated individual who is passionate about caring for patients with cancer and looking for a new challenge and an academic pathway to venture into the world of advanced practice. The academic study would take place alongside clinical experience within Cancer Care 

This role would best suit a nurse or AHP who has had some years of experience, who is prepared to expand their scope of practice within the 4 Pillars of Advanced Practice

  • Registered Healthcare Professional on relevant part of NMC / HCPC register
  • Completion of Healthcare Degree (or equivalent - Minimum 120 credits at L6 or evidence of Masters level study)
  • Committed and eligible for participation in and completion of MSc in area of speciality
  • Higher Education Institute approved course in supporting learners in practice or the ability to Provide evidence of: • Supporting a range of learners in practice • Supporting colleagues to promote effective learning in practice
  • Evidence of on-going personal and professional development
  • Basic keyboard skills with knowledge of Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Significant Post Registration experience within chosen specialty
  • Broad awareness of wider Trust initiatives / pressures
  • Coaching/leadership experience
Desirable criteria
  • Completion of HTPA Competencies
  • Independent Non-Medical Prescribing Qualification
  • ILS trained
  • Evidence of ability to change or initiate practice
  • Registered on MSc Pathway as an experienced practitioner
  • Further study at Level 7 within relevant pathway
  • Leadership qualification (RCN, LDC, Edward Jenner, Elizabeth Garret Anderson, Nye Bevan)
  • Maths and English Level 2 or have recognised equivalence from the ENIC process
