The opportunity  
The role of the Clinical Nurse is to provide leadership, support, research and education both within the ward based multidisciplinary team as well as the broader hospital and health service to ensure the provision of best practice in the clinical specialty of Cognitive Impairment within a continuum of care framework.

This position will undertake review and assessment of the geriatric patients in consultation with Nurse Unit Manager, Clinical Nurse Consultant and Medical teams to assess suitability for transfer into the secure unit. The Clinical Nurse will also provide support to the Standard lead of Cognitive Impairment to meet the requirements of the Townsville University Hospital within the Townsville Hospital and health Service.

Medical Ward 5 is a secure facility located on the ground floor and is a 30-bed unit that provides care for the acute medical geriatric patients. It allows the geriatric patient to be managed in a setting that is appropriate to their current needs. The unit consists of 17 acute medical beds and 13 secure beds that are for acute delirium and escalated Behaviors and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia (BPSD).

Medical Ward 5 has a secure setting and large gym facilities for extensive medical, nursing and allied health input to optimise the patient experience from admission to discharge. The staff in Medical Ward 5 have all been recruited specifically to treat patients with geriatric syndromes including delirium and dementia.

Role requirement   

  • Mandatory: Bachelor of Nursing or equivalent is a mandatory qualification for this position.
  • Highly Desirable: Postgraduate qualifications relevant to the position or working towards a relevant qualification.
  • Shift Workers: Appointees will be required to work all shifts in accordance with the unit roster, which will include participation in an on-call roster.

Generous remuneration package value up to $132,289 p.a.comprising:

  • Salary rates between $4138.10 - $4431.10 p.f. (NG6-1)
