An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Acute Surgery team within the Surgery Care Group as a Consultant Surgeon in GI and Acute Surgery with a 10-12 PA job plan. Candidates should be able to manage an undifferentiated General Surgical take based in a busy teaching hospital and major trauma centre and should have a subspecialist GI interest. Candidates should have GMC specialist registration.

You will be part of a team of 8 Consultants (two sub teams of four) alternating weeks of elective GI practice and weeks of managing the General Surgical take Monday to Friday midday (Weekend take is managed by other teams within the GI subspecialty consultant team)
There is a rolling 8 week rota alternating between acute and elective weeks. The 4 Acute weeks comprise 2 weeks of managing the take, 1 week of Ambulatory care and 1 week of cross cover. 

There is a 4 night on call commitment on an 8 week cycle, weekdays only, and spread on different weeks.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

WHAT YOU’LL DO:

  • Manage an undifferentiated General Surgical take (paired with a colleague)
  • Manage General Surgical major trauma.
  • Have an independent elective practice in Gastrointestinal Surgery.
  • Opportunities to take on management / supervisor roles.
  • Opportunities to be involved in Training, Teaching and Research / Trials
  • Be part of a very supportive team

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR:

  • Specialist registration (equivalent experience will be considered)
  • Ideally post graduate higher degree.
  • Interest in wider aspects of Consultant practice (as above)
  • Willingness to work a 10-12PA contract

Qualifications and training

Essential criteria
  • Entry on GMC Specialist Register; eligible for entry on Register or within six months of receipt of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) at time of interview
  • Success in Intercollegiate Specialty Examination or equivalent
  • Higher Qualification in specialty i.e. FRCS
Desirable criteria
  • Postgraduate degree
  • Post CCT Fellowship

Previous or relevant experience

Essential criteria
  • Clinical training and experience equivalent to UK CCT in General Surgery
  • Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on a range of problems in Acute and/or GI surgery
  • Experience of supervising Foundation and core trainees
  • Ability to teach clinical skills
  • Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical problems
  • Experience of audit management
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in management of NET tumours
  • Experience in a major trauma centre

Getting to Work

Application can be made for parking on site at UHS or through one of the park and ride schemes. This will be based on specific criteria to determine eligibility for site parking as this can be very limited.  UHS encourages staff to utilise other green methods of getting to work such as cycling or walking where possible.
