Research Entomologist

An excellent opportunity is available for a Research Entomologist to join the Infectious Diseases and Immune Defence Division at Australia’s pre-eminent biomedical research institute.

About the Position The Infectious Diseases and Immune Defence Division maintains several mosquito colonies in an Arthropod containment facility or Insectary. Insectary research activities include ongoing maintenance of an Anopheles stephensi mosquito colony for malaria.

This position will develop the regulatory and experimental expertise for rearing mosquitoes suitable for controlled human malaria infection clinical trials. The appointee will be involved in establishing the infrastructure and regulatory requirements for this capability.

This position is also responsible for overall management, budgetary planning, and service provision, including oversight of routine operations and the provision of training for Insectary users. In addition to undertaking tasks associated with the care, husbandry, and maintenance of mosquitoes, they may also be required to work with genetically manipulated mice in the facility, or other specialist responsibilities. This position is responsible for communicating with research group leaders and Head of Laboratory Operations on any compliance issues that may arise.

Selection Criteria

  • Experience and demonstrated ability in a research field that includes working in an Insectary or equivalent.
  • Research experience in animal work and mouse models.
  • Knowledge of best practice approaches in handling insects and vector-borne parasites/viruses.
  • Experience maintaining specialised equipment and facility infrastructure.
  • Ability to work autonomously with considerable independence
  • Strong stakeholder management with the ability to influence and negotiate
  • Strong team player with the ability to work effectively with a range of people to achieve positive outcomes.
  • Demonstrates excellent organisational and forward planning skills
  • Excellent attention to detail, ensuring that data, methods and theories are accurate, of high-quality and accessible to other researchers
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

This is a leadership position that will play a critical role in driving our success and growth.Core Responsibilities include• Implement commercial strategic account management practices to maximize value from key clients, with the aim to expand the service offering through the clinical development program.• Develop a deep understanding of each portfolio client's business, including their pipeline, therapeutic focus, and key decision-makers.• Establish and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders at each client, including C-suite executives, R&D leaders, and procurement managers.• Serve as the primary point of contact for all strategic commercial matters, ensuring clear communication and alignment between the client, operations and our organization.• Collaborate with internal teams, including project management, clinical operations, and finance, to ensure the delivery of high-quality services that meet the client's expectations and business goals.• Proactively identify opportunities for expanding our services within each client's portfolio, working closely with the commercial teams (business development, marketing, proposals, contracts) to develop and execute growth strategies.• Act as a trusted advisor to each client, providing strategic commercial guidance, industry insights and connect them to the appropriate internal and external stakeholders to help them achieve their drug development objectives.• Coordinate with marketing and communications teams to develop tailored messaging and materials for each client, highlighting our capabilities and value proposition.• Regularly review and evaluate the overall health of each client relationship, identifying areas for improvement and implementing corrective actions as needed.• Participate in regular governance meetings with portfolio clients, in conjunction with operational teams, providing updates on project status, performance metrics, and strategic initiatives.• Work with the commercial leadership team to identify and prioritize potential partnership opportunities with CROs and other operating partners in targeted regions.• Develop and maintain a network of contacts within the CRO industry to facilitate partnership discussions.
